3 What to consider when selecting a UPS?
Why UPS is important? What to consider when selecting a UPS? UPS ultimate mission: … to secure continuity of a critical process by supplying uninterrupted, clean power to the critical load, maximizing availability. Identified criticality level of a process dominates also the infrastructure design: Sets the requirements for electrical power infrastructure around it Defines the levels of reliability and availability that needs to be achieved Defines the level of reasonable investment UPS is the core of power infrastructure Selecting correct UPS type for the application is the most critical part of site planning © ABB September 18, 2018 | Slide 3

4 The concept of modular UPS
What makes it so unique Modular design allows the power protection capacity to be added when needed to meet the existing demand, instead total up front deployment. Standardized modular design allows changes to such fundamentals as load criticality thus needed protection level, installed power quantity and density. Modular designs typically include the ability to add redundancy which increases significantly the system availability. ABB / Newave was the first to offer modular UPS to the market in 1998 - this drives to a technology advantage and experience!! © ABB September 18, 2018

5 The concept of modular UPS
Online swappable modules The Conceptpower DPA TM modules are fully independent and contain all main components: All power circuits (rectifier, inverter, battery charger) System logic Static switch and static switch control Control Panel and display Separate battery connection = UPS Module The module is a complete UPS ! © ABB September 18, 2018

6 The concept of modular UPS
OSM – Online Swappable Modules Online swappable modules (OSM) means that in a redundant UPS system, any module can be removed, added or replaced while supplying load secured power in double conversion mode. System does not need to be switched off or transferred to static or maintenance bypass for repair, maintenance or capacity upgrades. High availability of power protection systems Safe scaling-up of system Easy fault recovery © ABB September 18, 2018

7 Modular Architectures
Centralized, traditional architectures In Centralized Parallel Architectures some components are common to the system: Central system logic Control Panel (Display) Static Bypass Battery Rectifier input Bypass input SYSTEM LOGIC CENTRAL CONTROL PANEL Module 1 Redundant POWER UNIT Module 2 CENTRAL BATTERY PACKS Only the power modules are decentralized and can be redundant with each other  System has single points of failure that compromise system reliability – and availability! Redundant POWER UNIT Module 3 Redundant POWER UNIT CENTRAL STATIC BYPASS Output to the critical load © ABB September 18, 2018

8 Modular Architectures
Decentralized Paralleling Architecture (DPA) Rectifier input Bypass input In Decentralized Paralleling Architecture there are no common components to the system. All essential functions are independent and de-centralized: System logic Control Panel (Display) Static Bypass Power Units Separate Battery connection Module 3 DPA CONTROL PANEL DPA SYSTEM LOGIC DPA POWER UNIT DPA STATIC BYPASS DPA BATTERY PACKS Module 2 DPA CONTROL PANEL DPA SYSTEM LOGIC DPA POWER UNIT DPA STATIC BYPASS No common parts to the system – no single points of failure  Increased reliability and availability!
