2 Do Now! What is manifest destiny? Why were people willing to risk moving west? Who was impacted the most by manifest destiny? Why?

Americans felt it was their “god given right” to take control of the entirety of the continent. John O’Sullivan Newspaper Editor: God “has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and … self government!” Catchy term to justify American actions The Native Americans impacted the most

4 Why They Went West? Improvements to technology made it possible!
Claim new land for farming New markets More living space for incoming immigrants Seek employment and avoid creditors What economic problem was going on in the US in 1837? Spread democracy!

Black Hawk War (1832): Chief Black Hawk led revolt against U.S. gov.t (Illinois, Iowa) the govt. wanted natives to move west of the Mississippi After 4 months and the slaughter of 200 innocent Sauk and Fox tribe people the natives were moved The Middle Ground: land not claimed by the natives or settlers (trade with each other) middle ground moved as settlers moved west Why did we went them to move west of Mississippi- that was our border “unofficial” AJ said we’ll move them west of Mississippi then advisor said what happens when we go there? Move um farther west - Manifest Destiny, Pacific Ocean becomes goal so they became a problem, Abraham Lincoln fought in the war - After that he became weary of war Rounded up innocent people said stay here you’ll be safe - then they killed them

13 Mormons 1827 Joseph Smith (message from God) started the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) in New York in 1830 Hostile neighbors moved west to Commerce (Nauvoo) Illinois in 1839 Grew quickly but faced hostile neighbors (polygamy) Smith was jailed then murdered Brigham Young moved the Mormons further west to the Great Salt Lake (Salt Lake City) in 1847
