4 High Frequency Words, Tricky Words, Sight Words and Word Boxes
What do these terms mean? How do we help children to learn them in school? How can you help at home? These are the words that appear the most when children are learning to read. Some of them are decodable which means they can be sounded out such as it, in, up, but but others are not decodable we call these tricky words such as the, to, is, was. In order to accelerate the rate of learning to read we have decided to implement reading boxes. Go through activities for HFW learning (bingo, post its, by the door, pairs, looking for the word in reading books, dice) these can also be done at home, repetition of these words is very important as research has shown that children need to see a word 80 times before they are able to remember it!

5 Reading at Home Wordless Reading books Simple reading books
Other stories and reading Go through who what when where why question cards- and word mat Encourage the children to sound out, pick out letters they know, notice hfw and use the pictures to help them explain what is in the story Children benefit hugely from exposure to books from a young age. Enjoying and sharing books with you at home will help children see books as a source of pleasure and interest and this will motivate them to value reading in the future.

7 Fine Motor Skills and Writing
At this age the muscles in the children’s hands are still not developed enough for writing even though they may be able to hold a pencil and write some letters. This is why it is very important for us to practice fine motor and pre writing skills. We focus on this during the recap week and make different shapes and lines we also provide independent activities during the other weeks that children are invited to come and have a go which they enjoy. These can also be done at home as well as practicing name writing with a capital letter to start and lower case for the rest of the name. Discuss pictures and pre writing shapes
