Welcome to the kindergarten Parent Information Event

2 Daily Folder Daily folders should be brought to school every day
Homework and important notes can be found in the front pocket Includes monthly behavior & reading calendar-parents are to initial each day indicating that their child has read for 20 minutes Marked daily with your child’s behavior indicated for that day (pink/purple- fantastic day; green-good day; yellow-warning; red-needs improvement) Calendar also includes information on the themes we are studying and important dates to remember.

6 Reading We use the Success For All Kinder Corner program
We begin with phonemic awareness activities Stepping Stones: Letter/sound concepts -White books (Concepts of Print) –Are theme related mini books. They are teacher directed reading activity used to teach concepts of print. Please fill out and return the green slips when you turn in the books on Mondays. These books will be sent home periodically for students to practice with and return the following week. (Mondays) Please work on the sight word list in your packet and read to/with your child for 20 minutes a night. Your child should be writing and answering the questions on the back of the green slip.

7 Reading (continued) Kinder Roots
- Reading program begins during Unit: 7 - 22 books in the series - Students spend 1 week on each book *Students will be tests on their understanding of the story each Friday. Then, the students will bring the book home for the week to read daily. - Please return the books on the following Monday with the completed orange bookmark. -Parents need to sign bookmark & students need to complete the activities in their own handwriting. These are turned in as homework.

8 Language Arts We use a combination of Common Core and SFA writing strategies. Journals-students have individual journals that they write in during class. 3rd and 4th quarter the students will also have writing homework. Literacy based writing- Read and respond to text, note talking skills and story retells. Interactive Writing- students brainstorm with a partner, whole group or a team. (cooperative learning strategies) Your child should be practicing writing letters, words and sentences at home nightly. By December, students will be expected to be able to write at least one sentences on their own.

9 Math Go Think Central Student user names & passwords will be sent home when they are given to the teachers.

10 Science & Social Studies
Science and social studies concepts are embedded into our 16 themed units. Scholastic Weekly Readers Science fusion lessons STEM learning activities/coding (Dot and Dash)

11 Grading System S-satisfactory N-needs improvement
The student’s grades are based on mastery of the State Standards and mastery of concepts taught in class Kindergarten promotion is mastery of % of the Standards. Students are graded by formal and informal assessments as well as teacher observations. Students are assessed quarterly with the opportunity to master the skills by the end of each quarter.

12 Reminders Please look through the entire packet that you were given.
Please sign up to be a Dividend on the SCPS website. You must be a dividend in order to participate in all school activities. ● Any incomplete work must be completed at home and returned. Please put all important notes in the clear sheet protector. Please make sure your child knows if they will be buying hot lunch, cold lunch, or PB&J. The students will come in every morning from here on out and move their name to order their own school lunches. Please make sure they know the difference between a lunchbox with lunch in it and a lunchbox with snack.
