1 Paired Reading Programme

2 The Paired Reading Programme for Senior Infants will commence on the week beginning Monday 29/01/2018 for 6 weeks excluding the week of mid-term beginning 12/02/2018.

3 What is Paired Reading? A shared reading experience for parent and child which enhances the child's love of books. A chance for parent and child to sit together and enjoy a book without the pressure of being able to read it.

4 Stages in Paired Reading
Pre- stage –Parent reads to child as child looks at text. Parent and child talk about the story (Senior Infants). Stage 1: Parent and child read together. Stage 2: Child reads, parent listens. Stage 3: Child reads alone and reports to parents.

5 What does it involve? Child chooses a new book in school every day.
Parent /guardian and child sit together and parent reads book to child. Parent and child talk about the story and the pictures. Child is not expected to read the book. Child receives a new book every day for 6 weeks. Parent fills in reading record. Remember: It doesn’t have to be mum!

7 What if my child wants to read the book?
Let her do so but as soon as she gets stuck on a word...GIVE IT. Never leave her struggling with a word. Child can decide when she needs help. No sounding out needed. Give lots of praise. Talk about the story.

8 SPECIAL FEATURES Child chooses own book- during Aistear time your
Time spent reading together. Praise and feedback. The child decides when she needs help. The child is never left struggling The child usually enjoys. Celebration day-certificates.

11 PISA 2009 Reading improves when a child is read to regularly.
The number of books in the home was a big factor in reading attainment. The child who is able to read but doesn’t is just as disadvantaged as the child who cannot read. .

12 Don’t forget to use the library!
