2 Symbolism The practice of giving an object a meaning that represents a set of thoughts, emotions, and people. Cross-Christianity Flag- The United States of America

3 Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature.

5 Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound it represents.

7 Similes A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by like or as. Ron Cey plays baseball like a penguin

8 Simile Examples Ed plays basketball like a Warrior
Tina moves like a tortoise Sidney’s brain runs like a machine

9 Simile Activity Each student must think of three similes, then each group will select the three best similes with illustrations to share with the class. Michael Johnson runs like a gazelle

10 Metaphors Definition: A figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something important in common.

11 Metaphors Example: An olive branch is a metaphor for an offer of peace. On a literal level, a peace offer has nothing in common with an olive branch.

12 Metaphor Activity Each student must think of three metaphors.
Each group will select the best three metaphors to share with the class.

14 Personification Defined
A person or thing that represents a trait to such a high degree that the person or thing becomes symbolic of that trait. We hoped that the angry storm would calm.

15 Personification Activity
Each person must think of at least two personification. As a group present the best three personifications with illustrations to the class. It was a gripping art piece.

16 Idioms

17 Idioms defined Idiom: A phrase that literally has nothing to do with the message, but has a hidden meaning that relates to the intended message. I heard it from the horses mouth. Meaning: The information came from the source.

18 Idioms Activity Each student must think of at least two idioms. Each group must present at least three idioms with illustrations to the class.

19 Hyperbole

20 Hyperbole Defined An obvious and intentional exaggeration.
She wears so much perfume that I need a gas mask to go near her.

21 Hyperbole Activity Each student must think of two hyperboles. Each group shall share the best two hyperboles with illustrations with the class. Whenever I go to work at the office, I find myself swimming with sharks

22 Review Activity Each Group must think of a simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, and a hyperbole.
