2. Mummies: Preserving the Dead
A preserved mummy body was placed in a special set of coffins.
The first coffin in the set resembled the shape of the human or animal body. This photograph shows one of the first coffins.

3. This outermost layer is called a sarcophagus.
Finally the coffin was placed in the last layer which was typically made of stone.

Hapi: the baboon-headed god representing the north, whose jar contained the lungs
Duamutef: the jackal-headed god representing the east, whose jar contained the stomach
Imseti: the human-headed god representing the south, whose jar contained the liver
Qebehsenuef: the falcon-headed god representing the west, whose jar contained the intestines

7. One of the more famous Egyptian Pharaohs goes by King Tut.
He became a pharaoh of Egypt at 9 years old! Would you be ready to rule a country in 1 or 2 years?
Here is a photograph of his sarcophagus. As you can see it is decorated with color and gold. Royalty had very elaborate sarcophaguses.

8. Here is an example of a cat sarcophagus.
Pets were also mummified and buried with royalty or high ranking officials. This allowed for the owner to have their beloved pet in the afterlife.
Sometimes mummified animals were also given as gifts to the gods.

9. Egyptian Hieroglyphs
The formal writing system used by Egyptians that includes both logos (symbols) as well as the alphabet.

12. This is a carving of the Egyptian god, Anubis, the jackal-headed god.
He is the god of the dead and mummification. Was said to be the ‘protector of the graves.’
