2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 1 Nature/Map Reading: Riddle of the Sphynx Purpose: To identify the natural flora and fauna of the area, and test map reading skills. Equipment: Gear you would normally have during a walk through the woods. Objective: Demonstrate knowledge of the outdoors. Scenario: To be given at the station. Scoring: Scoring will be based on Proficiency, Teamwork and Scout Spirit. Time will be a tie breaker. PATROL SCORE Time: Station Score: Teamwork & Scout Spirit: Total = Sled Inspection:

2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 2 Wood Tools: Ancient Egyptian Tools Purpose: Patrols will demonstrate their knowledge of woods tools safety and use by successfully completing several challenges. Patrol Leaders and Patrols will have opportunity to demonstrate leadership and teamwork. Equipment: Hand Ax and Totin’ Chip cards. Objective: Participants will demonstrate their knowledge of woods tools safety and practice by competing the challenges outlined below. Scenario: Your team has arrived at camp late and a sand storm is fast approaching. You will need to set up camp and stockpile the supplies needed to endure the storm. A supply of wooden tent stakes, kindling, and firewood are needed as quickly as possible. Good luck. Scoring: In addition to displaying teamwork, your score will be based on the ability to safely: • Produce kindling /wooden stakes using a hand axe. • Using a two-man saw to cut wood. 2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 3 Rifle Range: Egyptian Hieroglyphs Purpose: To test knowledge, skill, and marksmanship using firearms. Equipment: All necessary equipment will be provided. Objective: Only 4 sharp shooters from each patrol will shoot for total score. This will allow 2 patrols to participate at the same time. This will allow all patrols to participate in this event. If possible, open range time will be available after all patrols have competed. Scenario: To be given at the station. Scoring: Scoring will be based on Time, Accuracy, Leadership, Teamwork and Scout Spirit. PATROL SCORE Time: Total Target Score: Teamwork & Scout Spirit: Total = Sled Inspection:

2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 4 Fire Building: Pyramid Traps Purpose: To make you more knowledgeable about the different ways to make fire, and hone your knife skills. Equipment: Pocket knive, Totin’ Chit. Objective: You are given the task to make a Fuzzy Stick, and start a fire with it. The fire must then burn thru a rope to set off a Pyramid trap. Scenario: To be given at the station. Scoring: Scoring will be based on Material, Starting Fire, Sustainability, Teamwork, Time, and Scout Spirit. 2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 5 Knots & Lashings: Pyramid Pioneers Purpose: To demonstrate use of knots & lashings while solving a problem as a team. Equipment: Rope, Pocket Knife, Totin’ Chip, Lots of creativity! Objective: Participants will work as a team and utilize their Scouting skills in an attempt to solve one of the great engineering mysteries of the world - how can you build a pyramid without heavy construction equipment? . Scenario: Pharaoh Bob has ordered the construction of a pyramid to memorialize his years serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 1 of Luxor. The royal designers have asked the Scouts of the Cradle of Civilization Council to combine traditional Egyptian materials with their knowledge of knots and lashings to create a "pioneering pyramid" commemorating Bob's accomplishments. Scoring: Scoring will be based upon the difficulty rating of the challenge you select, your use of designated knots/lashings in the challenge, and scout spirit/teamwork demonstrated while tackling the task. Equipment: Objective: Scenario: To be given at the station. Scoring: Scoring will be based on Time, Proficiency, Teamwork and Scout Spirit. 2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 7 Survival: What the Desert Night Holds Purpose: To test the survival skills of the Patrol. Equipment: What you have on your sled and what you can find around you. Objective: Build a shelter for 2 people and survive the night. Scenario: While searching for King Tut’s tomb, your patrol becomes separated from the rest of the troop late one afternoon. As you all look at the desert landscape, the light is growing less and less as the sun is going down. The night will be bringing temperatures nearing to and possibly below 32 degrees F. You now know that you will not be able to get back to the rest of your group. You will need to quickly set up in a location to keep yourself warm through the night. You will need to use what you have on your sled (ropes, blanket, staves, sled,…), the natural materials around and the knowledge you have to survive the night. Scoring: Scoring will be based on Time, Teamwork, Scout Spirit, and how well you complete the task. Stability, Height, Protection, Dry, Extras. Total time allowed will be 20 minutes. 2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 8 Archery: So You Think You Can Be a Palace Guard? Purpose: To test knowledge, skill, and marksmanship using bow and arrow. Equipment: All necessary equipment will be provided. Objective: Use the provided hieroglyphs to spell out the words given to the patrol, the smaller hieroglyphs will spell a word that corresponds with the bigger hieroglyph on the target. Then the scouts must use the bow and arrow to hit the hieroglyph that corresponds to the words they deciphered. They will be given four words to decipher. Scenario: So you think you have what it takes to be a palace guard? Well, we need to be ready for the next time locusts and frogs come raining out of the sky, so we are going to get you guys prepared by practicing our archery skills. Scoring: Scoring based on Translation, Accuracy, Teamwork, and Scout Spirit. PATROL SCORE Time: Station Score: Teamwork & Scout Spirit: Total = Sled Inspection:

2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby 9 8-Knot Challenge: Purpose: For the Patrol to demonstrate their knowledge, ability, and skill with practical uses of knots. Equipment: Rope. Objective: Working together, the Patrol members must suspend a log between two trees using the 8 standard knots you must know as a scout. Scenario: To be given at the station. Scoring: Scoring based on Time, Knot Skills and Knowledge, Teamwork and Scout Spirit. PATROL SCORE Time: Station Score: Teamwork & Scout Spirit: Total = Sled Inspection:

2018 Return of the Pharaoh Continental District Klondike Derby Mummy Race: Mass Grave Found!! Purpose: To help you work together as a patrol, and to develop your leadership and communication skills. Equipment: Costumes for 3 in 1 mummies, wraps of cloth, gauze or other ‘bandages’ to provide required wraps A sense of humor, practice and a good sense of balance and coordination Objective: Show that you can work together seamlessly as a team and help each other with reasoning, communication, and cooperation skills. Scenario: Mass grave unearthed near Giza Plateau It appears that a grave containing dozens of mummies has been discovered. In a strange twist, it looks like there must have been a shortage of linen when these mummies were entombed. It seems that the mummies are wrapped side by side in groups of three? The center mummy shares lag wrappings with those on either side. And the three share body wrappings. As the sun set, grunts and groans were heard from the excavation site in the shadow of the great pyramids. Could they be coming back to life? Scoring: Participating 25 points (thanks for showing up) Overall Mummy Costume 25 max (did they get into it?) Extent of wrappings, body, legs, arms, hands, head but do not cover the eyes! (cloth, gauze or ace bandages, duct tape?) ( look like mummies?) First place 50 points, Second place 40 points, Third place 30, fourth 20, fifth 10 Penalty for missing or failed wraps at end of race -5 points each!!!
