1 HOPI TRIBE-DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES Hopi Environmental Protection Office (HEPO) Air Quality Program

2 History : Through funding from General Assistance Program (GAP) an emissions inventory was conducted identifying local area sources which may be impacting the Hopi reservation. 2009: The HEPO secured 103 funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Act (CAA).

3 Continued 2009-current date: The HEPO made contact with the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) a program for Tribes based out of Northern Arizona University (NAU). ITEP provides training for not only Arizona Tribes but for Tribes throughout the United States. 2010: HEPO secured Mini-Vol equipment from the Tribal Air Monitoring Support (TAMS) center to assess particulate matter 10 (PM10).

4 Short term ozone assessment project
In FY-2012 Hopi’s short term ozone assessment project was approved by EPA Region 9. A request was made to the Tribal Air Monitoring Support (TAMS) center to loan ozone analyzer and calibration unit. (need to make request as soon as possible). Another request was made to ITEP for Professional Assistance (PA) to assist with the set-up and initial and final audits.

5 Short term ozone assessment project
A Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) was drafted with the assistance from ITEP (Melinda Ronca-Batista), and submitted to Region 9’s Quality Assurance Office. Once submitted, Follow-up, need to keep checking. Review was completed and minor revisions were cited with conditions (needed to attend a training).
