1 The Battle of Jutland Presented by Aaron Correya, Kunal Gupta, Rithvik Nallapareddy, Divya Puvvadi, and Kaley Romero

2 Thesis The stalemate at the Battle of Jutland spurred the Germans to resort to unrestricted submarine warfare in order to weaken the British economy; in doing so, the United States was soon drawn into the war and ultimately shifted the balance of power to favor the Allied Forces.

4 Early Stages Began May 31, 1916 Germans aimed to defend ports and supply routes on North Sea from British Britain aimed to cut Germans off and preserve route into Continental Europe Vice Admirals Beatty (Britain) and Hipper (Germany) shot at each other Britain lost 3 ships Beatty lured Germans north, where British fleet awaited

5 Late Stages Admiral Jellicoe (British) cut Germany out of their home base Admiral Scheer (German) turned around, escaped obliteration Britain had nearly double the losses (ships and men) Ended on June 1, 1916

7 Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
Submarines used (also known as U-boats) All vessels attacked Targets all enemies/neutral countries First declared by Germany near British Isles Eventually provokes US to enter war on Allied side Britian almost starved out of war US ships sunk while neutral
