1 Movement of the Earth Created By: Mr. Kreeger

2 Homework and Page References
HW #1- In one to two paragraphs explain where the direct rays of the sun are located at the beginning of each of the 4 seasons. What effect does this have on the temperature and altitude of the sun in NY HW # pg 460, 5-8 pg 464 HW # pg 466, pg 469

4 Introduction Video Movement of Earth

5 1. Rotation Rotation- The spinning motion of the Earth on it’s axis. 1 complete rotation takes 24 hours=1 day. Evidence Foucault's Pendulum- Changes direction of swing over time Coriolis Effect-Deflection of wind or water to right in NH Rate-Depends on Latitude (Board Activity)

6 2. Revolution Revolution- The movement of earth around the sun. It takes 365 days or one year to completely revolve. Closet pt-1.47*10^8km (Perihelion) Furthest pt- 1.52*10^8km (Aphelion) Evidence-Different star constellations visible throughout year. Rate-(Board Activity)

8 Visual Representation of Revolution of the Earth

9 3. Results of the Earth’s Tilt
Earth tilted 23.5 from perpendicular to the plane of the orbit. Direction of axis is always constant (North Star) North Pole tilted toward sun- NH longer days South Pole tilted toward sun- SH longer days.

10 Introduction to the Seasons

11 4. Seasons Causes Earth’s revolution Tilt of the earth on its axis
Higher sun is in the sky Longer day  More energy Lower sun is in the sky  Shorter day  Less energy

12 SUMMER AND WINTER SOLSTICES
Summer Solstice (June 21st)- Direct rays of the sun at 23.5 North (Tropic of Cancer), warmer and longer days in the NH, shorter and colder days in the SH Winter Solstice (Dec 21st)- Direct rays of the sun at 23.5 South (Tropic of Capricorn), warmer and longer days in SH, shorter and colder days in the NH

13 Equinoxes Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes- Occurs on March 21st and September 21st. The direct rays of the sun are at equator. Moderate temps for both NH and SH

17 3. Seasons in General From Dec 21st to March 21st angle increases. (Height on March 21st 48) From March 21st to June 21st angle increases. (Height on June 21st 72) From June 21st to Sept 21st angle . Decreases. (Height on Sept 21st 48) From Sept 21st to Dec 21st angle decreases. (height on Dec 21st 25)

18 Activity With a partner explain in 2 to 3 paragraphs what you think would occur to the seasons if the tilt of the earth increased or decreased. Explain your reasoning.
