2 What is a hurricane? A severe Tropical Cyclone with winds greater than 74mph. It can be up to 600 miles across Each hurricane usually lasts for over a week, moving miles per hour over the open ocean.

3 What is a hurricane? A hurricane gets heat and energy from the warm ocean waters. Evaporation from the seawater increases their power.

Hurricanes rotate in a counter-clockwise direction around an eye The center of the storm or "eye" is the calmest part. It has only light winds and fair weather.

The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30 Most Atlantic hurricanes occur in the fall The Eastern Pacific hurricane season is from May 15 to November 30.

15 What does it take to be called a HURRICANE?
Tropical Disturbance: Thunderstorms in the tropical oceans. They are about 24 hours long and have lots of rain and wind. Tropical Depression: Wind speeds of 38 mph or less.

Tropical Storm: wind speeds that range from 39 to 73 mph. Hurricane: wind speeds of at least 74 mph.
