How regeneration is managed? 4A.8 Local government policies aim to represent areas as being attractive for inward investment. a. Local governments compete to create sympathetic business environments with local plans designating areas for development for a range of domestic and foreign investors (Science Parks). (A: the actions of local authorities will affect their success) b. Local interest groups (Chambers of Commerce, local preservation societies, trade unions) play a key role in decision-making about regeneration; there are often tensions between groups that wish to preserve urban environments and those that seek change. ( London Olympics 2012) (A: differing attitudes may cause conflicts) c. Urban and rural regeneration strategies include retail-led plans, tourism, leisure and sport ( London Olympics 2012), public/private rural diversification ( Powys Regeneration Partnership).

3 Creating Business Environments
Local Authorities compete against each other to try and create competitive environments which will attract companies and skilled workers For example, RED ROCK is Stockport Council’s answer to the Trafford Centre and Manchester City Centre.

4 Local Interest Groups As well as local authorities, local interest groups can also influence regeneration These groups may agree or disagree with the council It tends to be wealthier and older residents who are more vocal about their local interests

6 Regeneration Strategies
You are going to be working in small groups to create a PowerPoint presentation which focuses on different regeneration strategies, predominantly in Liverpool but also some national significant strategies. Success Criteria: You should prepare a presentation which lasts five minutes. You should prepare an accompanying information handout which summarises your presentation Include a section about key players You should focus on how your area has been regenerated and how it has impacted (both positively and if relevant negatively on different stakeholders.)

7 Regeneration Strategies
Group 1: Sports- led regeneration using the London Olympic Park as your case study. Group 2: Retail-led regeneration plans using Liverpool One as your case study. Group 3: Culture-led regeneration using Albert Docks as your case study. Group 4: Heritage –led regeneration using Beatles and Slavery Museum as your case study. Group 5: Education/knowledge-led regeneration using Liverpool and John Moore’s Universities. TASK: Research the strategy. Who are the key players? What are the benefits of this strategy?

8 Task Tasks: Research your regeneration strategy
Discuss and choose an appropriate way to present it your work Agree who is discussing what during your presentation (you should all say something) Prepare your handout.
