Quoted response When asked if foods strengthened with vitamins and nutrients make them healthier, the Associated Press quotes in the article “Dressed Up Junk Food” that “According to nutrition experts, the answer is no.”

1 paraphrased example In the article, “Dressed Up Junk Food”, when people see words on foods and drinks like calcium-enriched and brag on the label that it has a plethora vitamin B, people end up thinking that it’s healthy and eat far more than they should, leading them to eat far more calories than they may realize, which is not healthy.

Summary In Milwaukee, Wisconsin food and beverage manufacturers have been and are currently adding vitamins and nutrients to food and drink labels to increase their appeal to health-conscious consumers and sell more of their products, but it is unclear if these products really good for you.

Key Ideas Food and beverage makers are adding vitamins and other nutrients to their products to make them more appealing to consumers, claiming that it makes the products healthier. These products include vitamin waters and sports drinks, as well as candy that has vitamin B added and claims to boost energy. Consumers are willing to pay more for them, even in a weak economy. Such products now account for more than $27 billion in sales every year. Critics say that these foods are nothing more than junk foods made to look healthy. They say studies haven't shown that the products are healthier, and therefore companies are deceiving people. They say these products could lead people to consume too much of some nutrients, plus too many calories and fats.

Thought question idea for lexile and stretch version
Nutrition experts are concerned about the increase in vitamin-fortified products. They feel that these products could lead people to eat too much of certain nutrients. Nutrition experts feel that the popularity of functional foods could lead to the intake of excess calories and fats. They say these foods are about marketing, not health. Nutrition experts feel that some companies are misleading consumers, tricking them into believing that functional foods are healthy for them when there is no evidence that they are. The job of a nutritionist is to plan food and nutrition programs in order to help people stay healthy. A nutritionist might also supervise meal preparation and oversee the serving of meals.
