1 COACHES: MS ZEOLI AND MS VEGA
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD COACHES: MS ZEOLI AND MS VEGA

2 Competition Info: Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at Scarsdale Middle School
20 events 5 builds, 15 tests

3 Sci Oly Preparation Every Thursday leading up to the event
Occasional Tuesdays during January and February Must prepare during these times, and can prepare on own

4 Sci Oly Preparation Rules must be summarized by Thursday, October 27th
Materials must be determined by Thursday, November

5 Sci Oly Preparation Teams and events will be FINALIZED by Thursday, October 20th Each team will have ONE team leader – decided by coaches Based on experience, attendance, willingness

6 Events – Anatomy and Physiology
Test - Must study Nervous System Sense Organs Endocrine System Process skills – observation and inference, data analysis, calculations, etc.

7 Events – Disease Detectives
Test – must study! Food Illness Using the scientific method in related to food-borne illnesses Recognize risk factors for health problems Know the components of the scientific method used in investigating a disease outbreak to real-life situations affecting health Understand and interpret the basic concepts of mathematics (rates & proportions as attack rate, relative risk & odds ratio) used to assess health risks Recognize an case definition Know the different types of study designs used by epidemiologists and be able to recognize them from written accounts

8 Events – Dynamic Planet
Test – must study! Plate Tectonics

9 Events – Ecology Test – must study! Terrestrial Ecosystems of NA
Tundra Taiga (Boreal Forest or Coniferous Forest) Deciduous Forests Environmental concerns for tundra, taiga, and deciduous forests Role of these ecosystems in Earth’s climate Major Environmental Issues Conservation Biology – goals, environmental threats, actions ECOLOGY – how organisms interact with one another and with their environment ENVIRONMENT – living and non-living components

10 Events – Experimental Design
Test/Do Experiment: a process in which some treatment is applied to a number of subjects and its effects observed STATEMENT OF PROBLEM HYPOTHESIS Variables EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL MATERIALS PROCEDURE QUALITATIVE OBSERVATIONS QUANTITATIVE RESULTS GRAPHS STATISTICS ANALYSIS OF RESULTS POSSIBLE EXPERIMENTAL ERRORS CONCLUSION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

11 Events – Fast Facts Test
Must know facts about scientific concepts, famous scientists, vocabulary terms Be able to associate them by letter MUST PRACTICE

12 Events – Food Science Over a long period of time
Learn about making a certain food Practice and experiment making these products while developing a notebook Attend tournament and take written test and make products, impound notebook and bring supplies HAVE FUN!!!!

13 Events – Herptology Test – Must study! Reptiles and amphibians

14 Events – Hovercraft BUILD & TEST Self-propelled air-levitated vehicle
Up to two battery-powered motors that turn one propeller each to levitate and move the vehicle down a track Competitors must also be tested on their knowledge of classic mechanics (MOTION AND FORCES) and related topics Video clip

15 Events – Mission Possible
Build Must use SIMPLE MACHINES in order to transport an object Some sort of end result – last year’s was to ring a bell Video clip

16 Events – Meteorology Test Weather patterns and Climate

17 Events – Mystery Design
Teams will design, build, test and evaluate a structure that demonstrates understanding and proficiency of engineering design principles Examples of common materials that could be utilized include: paper, paper clips, rubber bands, binder clips, and tape; common household items: straws, paper or Styrofoam plastic cups, plates, bowls, toothpicks, spaghetti, wire, string, aluminum foil, cling and wrap; and computer supplies: CD/DVD disks. Example structures that teams may be asked to design: a bed, hammock, chair, swing, stool, wagon, umbrella, boat, parachute, neck or leg brace

18 Events – Optics Test and BUILD Behavior of light
Must shine a laser through a series of movable mirrors in order to get light to shine in a specific place

19 Events – Reach for the Stars
Test Students will demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the properties and evolution of stars especially star forming regions and supernova remnants and their observations with different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum: Radio, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-Ray and Gamma Ray. Part I: Constellations, Stars, and Deep Sky Objects Part II: Spectral Classification of Stars

20 Events – Road Scholar Test State Road Map Topographic Map

21 Events – Rocks and Minerals
Test Identification and knowledge of several rocks and minerals Given a list

22 Events – Scrambler Video clip
Designing and building a device that transports an Egg Transport Vehicle (ETV), with a Large Grade A uncooked chicken egg mounted to its front, a distance of 9 to 12 meters along a straight track as fast as possible Device should stop as close to the center of a terminal barrier, going as straight as possible and not hit the wall, without leaving a 2 meter wide lane

23 Events – Towers BUILD Given certain parameters of length, width, height, and material, each team is to design, build and test the lightest and tallest tower to carry a maximum standard load

24 Events – Wind Power Test and BUILD
Competitors must build turbine blades that attach to a full-size, unmodified CD During competition, the judges will attach the device to a DC motor They will then place a fan in front of the device and turn it on. The blades will spin, therefore creating voltage Test on alternative energy. Notes are allowed, and the test may also include power transmission and storage concepts.

25 Events – Wright Stuff Build Video clip
The event involves making, testing, and flying an airplane powered by a twisted rubber band, with the goal of achieving the longest flight duration
