Program of Events Opening Remarks Eric Clifton Howell High School Guidance Counselor As we start to present the scholarships, we ask that you follow along with the listing of scholarships and recipients that you received. When your scholarship is next, please proceed to the side of the stage by the podium and wait on the steps. This will keep our process running smoothly and quickly. After you present, we ask that both the sponsors and recipients walk back stage behind the curtain on the side of the stage by the podium to get your picture taken. This year’s Photographer is LEXI ROE PELLEGRINO, 11th grader at Howell High School.

Students may not be in attendance tonight due to a prior school commitment or activity. Students were expected to notify the Guidance Office ahead of time and are expected to have a family member fill in for them and accept their scholarship on their behalf. When presenting, sponsors can notify the audience of these circumstances.

1st National Bank in Howell Scholarship
This scholarship awards up to ten, non-renewable, $1,000 scholarships for Livingston County high school seniors to continue their academic or vocational education. Selection criteria focuses on: Academics (min. 3.0 GPA), Community Service, An Essay, Recommendation letters, Extra-curricular activities, after-school job, etc., Challenges, if any, overcome to graduate. American Red Cross Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior by the Howell High School Administration for the students that are the active participants in the high school blood program and exhibit a leadership role in the coordination and recruitment of blood drives. Bernie Gibbons Humanitarian Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating male senior who plans to study a humanitarian field (i.e. education, medicine, religious studies, psychology, social work or natural resources). GPA must be improved or maintained during high school. High School athletic participation required or you must have tried out for a team. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic and athletic achievement, courage, sportsmanship, and good citizenship. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to attend college and who has participated in track and cross country while in high school. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Howell High School senior to recognize and reward a student who exhibits academic achievement, demonstrates leadership and possesses a commitment to community service. 2017 is the 22nd year for the Susan & Christopher Garvey Music/Foreign Language Scholarship This scholarship has been given since 1996 in gratitude for the fine education my daughter & son received through Howell Public Schools. Both were scholar-athletes, bagpipers, choral musicians & pianists. They also volunteered extensively at school & in the community. As recipients of local, national and college-sponsored scholarships, Susan & Chris excelled at Alma and Hillsdale Colleges and in their careers. Howell Public Schools’ teachers and staff deserve some of the credit for their success. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has completed or will complete ALL of the following (academic criteria must be met in order to apply for this scholarship - transcript will be verified by preliminary committee): must be active in the Howell High School music department (choir/band), must have completed three or more years of foreign language classes, completed one or more advanced math or science courses (Pre-Calculus and Discrete Math, Calculus, Anatomy, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Chemistry), active in school or community volunteer projects. I'm Smart and Well Rounded Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is smart and well-rounded, participates in after-school activities, community service, demonstrates leadership, has a good work ethic and is admired by his/her peers and teachers. GPA 3.9 or above and rank in class #5 or better. Participates in after-school activity, sport, or club(s). Shows leadership. Holds a part-time job. The Jane Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior. It is named after Gwen Haggerty-Bearden’s mom, Jane Von Voigtlander. She was a single mom working as a waitress at Weber’s in Ann Arbor when she met Ted, her future adopted dad. Her mom was very resourceful and if they were poor, they didn’t know it. She did not graduate from high school, but worked hard to give her family a happy and healthy home. The recipient of this scholarship has other duties besides school that he/she must do. Be that work, taking care of family, etc. The purpose of the “Jane” Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a deserving and needful future college student. This award will go to a student who has a financial need AND has the desire to do better for themselves. The Ted Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior. It is in honor of Gwen Haggerty-Bearden’s late father, Ted Von Voigtlander. Ted was an entrepreneur. He enlisted in the Marines and went to Korea. He worked a variety of jobs including: pizza deliverer, shoe salesman, and bike courier. While Ted was working at Discount Tire Company in Ann Arbor, the owner saw something he liked and asked Ted to be his partner. Ted was partner of Discount Tire Company until he passed in This scholarship goes to the person who exemplifies Ted’s work ethic. This scholarship will be awarded to the student who is determined to succeed, no matter what. GPA 2.5 or above.

Harris Family Scholarships: Joseph S. Harris Memorial Scholarship
PRESENTER: Charles J V Harris Joseph S. Harris Memorial Scholarship STUDENT RECIPIENT: NOLAN MIKHAIL RECTOR-BROOKS Helen Urbas Harris Memorial Scholarship STUDENT RECIPIENT: REBEKAH KATHLEEN SPOOR The Joseph S. Harris Memorial Scholarship was established in 1982 by the family and friends of Mr. Harris, a former member of the board of education, local businessman and active participant in community affairs. His widow, Helen, administered the scholarship for more than 25 years. The Helen U. Harris Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 by the family and friends of Mrs. Harris, a local businesswoman and active participant in community affairs. Nearly 100 scholarships have already been awarded since 1982.

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior by the Howell Athletic Boosters. This scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to pursue a degree in education. This scholarship is renewable for 4 years as long as the student remains in the education/teaching field in college. This scholarship will focus mostly on students involved in building trades, the firefighter program, interact club, or reaching higher. Howell High School Guidance Scholarship
The Howell High School Guidance Office is selling Congratulatory Ad’s for the Graduation program for all 2017 graduating seniors. All the money collected will be given to the student recipient selected for this scholarship. Parents, friends, family members, teachers, staff, anyone can still purchase a “Congratulatory Ad” for any senior in this year’s senior class. Howell Rotary Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has a strong emphasis on community service, academics, and extracurricular activities and who is planning to pursue a degree from a university or community college. This scholarship is in honor of William R. Ladner and William Christopherson, long time Rotarians. The Howell Rotary Club was founded May 5, 1924 and is a service-oriented club made up of business and professional people in the community. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally under the motto "Service Above Self.” We sponsor many fundraisers with money being dispersed to local and world-wide organizations to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, develop parks and recreational opportunities, promote peace, and eradicate polio. Our work advances international understanding, goodwill, and peace throughout a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in service. Of all the things that Rotary members think, say and do, we use the following "4 Way Test" to guide our decisions: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. James R. Nixon Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior by the family and friends of James R. Nixon, a lifelong resident of Howell. James Nixon was a former student and athlete who later became an active member of Howell Athletic Boosters and supporter of Howell High School athletic programs. Two scholarships are given to one graduating male athlete and one female athlete. The purpose of this scholarship is to help finance a student’s post secondary educational plans. Knights of Columbus Scholarship, William M. Kenney Memorial Scholarship The Knights of Columbus are a Catholic fraternal organization founded on the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The Knights of Columbus will be awarding one scholarship to a graduating senior. Students applying for this scholarship must be in the top 100 of your class, attending a 4 year college in engineering, computer science or other science/technology program in the Fall, and be a resident of the Howell Public School District. Mackenzie L. Watts Memorial Scholarships
Mackenzie was born in Owosso, Michigan, the daughter of George and Laurie Watts. Mackenzie made the people and world around her better. She was a friend to all who knew her and the impact of her life extended far beyond those. Whether she was in the classroom, at church, in the pool, or singing in the choir, Mackenzie approached life with such heart that an entire room would smile at her presence. A natural leader, Mackenzie was constantly supportive of her peers in any situation. She could be counted on for sound advice, words of encouragement, or an open ear. She was sincere, welcoming, and lived everyday with an enthusiasm only matched by her trademarked smile. Mackenzie was also a hard worker, determined to give it her all until her goals were accomplished. She faced every new challenge, tackled every new problem, and climbed over any barrier with joyful optimism and full commitment. Mackenzie was a true role model and set an example for others to strive for. Coaching young children, mentoring teammates, modeling dedication, piety, compassion and determination, Mackenzie, in her fifteen years on earth, demonstrated a life we should all try to emulate. Scholarships shall be awarded to seniors in good standing from a high school in the Howell Public School District. Applicants must be in good standing/credit eligible for commencement and diploma from Howell Public Schools. Grade point average of a “B” or better (3.0 or higher). Proven record of community service. Proven record of leadership role in school, organization or team (school organization officer, student council, or team captain).

Mackenzie L. Watts Memorial Scholarships
CHOIR SCHOLARSHIP (Male or Female): Varsity choir member with a minimum three years participation in the choir program. SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP (Male or Female): Varsity soccer team member with a minimum of two years participation on the soccer team, one of them being their senior year unless a medical/physical condition prohibits participation senior year; then only the senior year participation requirement is waived. SWIMMING/DIVING SCHOLARSHIP (Female): Women’s varsity swim team member with a minimum of two years participation on the swim team, one of them being their senior year unless a medical/physical condition prohibits participation senior year; then only the senior year participation requirement is waived. Marilou McMacken Memorial PomPon Scholarship
This scholarship is offered as a tribute in memory of the founder of the pompon squad, Marilou McMacken of She graduated from HHS in 1958 and devoted her life to teaching dance. This scholarship will be granted to a graduating senior on the Howell PomPon squad who exemplifies the qualities of good character, spirit, dedication, leadership and sets a good example in all facets of life. To qualify for this scholarship, you must meet high school graduation requirements, be a member of Howell PomPon squad for at least two years including entire senior year and be a person with good character who strives to be the best person he or she can be in all facets of life. Michigan State University Alumni Club of Livingston County Textbook Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to graduating seniors attending Michigan State University in the Fall of 2017 or Winter of Recognizing the increasing high costs of attending college, the MSU alumni club of Livingston County offers an annual scholarship of $1,000 to high school seniors residing in Livingston County. The funds are to be used for the purchase of textbooks, reading material, course packets and other resource material required for the student's courses while attending Michigan State University. To qualify the applicant must be a high school senior residing in Livingston County and has been accepted at MSU for the Fall of 2017 or Winter of 2018. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has progressed in a positive direction in school and intends to attend a post secondary educational program. It is named after Norman R. Paul Bennett/Bernie Gibbons Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior considered by the coaches and athletic department as the “male athlete of the year.” The Athletic Director and the coaches collectively decide on the recipient. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior by the PTMO, Parent Teacher Mentoring Organization who is continuing their education to a college, University or a trade school. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is outstanding in academics, citizenship, and good sportsmanship. Scott Pohl "Heart of a Highlander" Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in honor of Scott Pohl. Scott was a student-athlete and a 2005 graduate of Howell High School who lost his life in the summer of Scott was an All State Athlete while attending Howell High School, in addition a student who was passionate in construction trades and manufacturing. Scott’s father Karl Pohl funded the scholarship with funds donated by people who were close with Scott and wanted to do something to honor Scott’s memory. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior based on the Howell High School Football coaching staff nominating players that most represent the memory of Scott Pohl and the positive traits he had. The individual earning this scholarship is someone who represents the “Heart of a Highlander” meaning a person that is dedicated to Howell High and is a good person who cares about his/her teammates and classmates. This scholarship will be awarded to a Howell High School senior who has participated fully in high school with participation in student activities, athletics, leadership, volunteerism, and maintained good academic standing. PRESENTER: HHS Counselor STUDENT RECIPIENT: KELSEY EILENE COOK

The Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Co. and Cobb Hall Merit Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a Howell High School senior who is pursuing a baccalaureate in a business/management or insurance related field and has been accepted to an accredited college or university. Candidates should exhibit the following: good citizenship (i.e. display a positive outlook, show compassion, be professional, courteous and approachable), good attendance record, excellent oral/written communication skills and meet all academic standards with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Priority will be given to students involved in community and/or extracurricular activities. Financial need will also be taken into consideration. The Witt Family Scholarship
This Scholarship was created by the Witt Family. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior by Michele Schafer, Howell High School’s Teacher Consultant to help support the future interests, goals and dreams of a deserving student having an IEP and receiving a Certificate of Completion. VanGilder Family Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior with a minimum grade point of 2.5. Students applying must plan to attend a four year college in the Fall (in or out of state, and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester). Vocational Education Scholarship Award Sponsored by Dr. Sam Daniels
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is planning on attending to go into a vocational or trade school. Student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. This scholarship is to honor Enoch Daniels, sponsored by his son Dr. Sam Daniels. My dad worked as an aeromechanic from the age of 19 till he retired.
