The wildfire had quickly engulfed the small Tasmanian fishing town of Dunally, and swept towards the home where Tim and Tammy Holmes were babysitting their five grandchildren. There was no escape. No way out. And so the family did the only thing left open to them: they ran for the water. This photograph captures the moment the children jump into the water. Tammy Holmes and her grandchildren cling onto each other under the jetty as the wildfire rages around them. Behind them are walls of flame, the sky a lurid and demonic orange. The family's brave dog looks on. The story ended up with a happy ending and the children were reunited with their parents Dave and Bonnie Walker Saturday 5 January Amazingly noone was hurt by the wildfire. A building burns near the jetty where the family sheltered. This incredible set of moment capturing photographs should really get the class thinking empathetically and a powerful stimulus for news and creative writing. Image copyright: ©Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images ©Tim Holmes/AP

A farmer checks on her sheep on burnt farmland near Bookham, outside Yass, New South Wales. Although no humans have been killed by the bushfires so far, hundreds of thousands of animals have lost their lives. You can see in the this photo that some of the sheep have been singed by the fire. A wildfire crosses the Princes Highway near Deans Gap, south-east Australia. The picture really defines what's meant by a wall of fire. Terrifying. Image copyright: James Morris/AP ©James Morris/AP

No this picture isn't out of focus. It's the incredible heat that blurs the image. Rural fire service firefighters tackle a grass fire just outside of the town of Gunning in New South Wales. Image copyright: Gary Ramage/Newspix/ Rex Features ©Gary Ramage/Newspix/Rex Features

Huge numbers of Sydneysiders cool off on Bondi beach after record breaking temperatures this summer (which, don't forget is “held” during UK winter!). It's these high temperatures that have caused the terrible bushfires across the country. Image copyright: Andrew Milligan/PA Wire ©Sijori Images/Zuma Press/Corbis

Okay, we freely admit this photograph of Tiqui, a Brazilian tapir from Taronga zoo hasn't got a lot to do with bushfires. But the beast is very hot and having a much needed cool shower so there is a tenuous link. Zoo keepers have also been preparing special chilled treats for animals to give them respite from the hot weather.
