3 ETSI: Preparing significant 5G building blocks
ETSI is preparing significant 5G building blocks: Network Functions Virtualization (ISG NFV) Multi-Access Edge Computing (ISG MEC) Millimetre Wave Transmission (ISG mWT) Next Generation Protocols (ISG NGP) Mobile and Broadcast Convergence (ISG MBC) ... as well as existing activities, e.g.: Use of whitespace spectrum, Spectrum Sharing (licensed and unlicensed) (TC RRS) Quantum Safe Cryptography (TC CYBER) Energy Efficiency (TC EE) Use of Satellites in 5G (TC SES) …and more, e.g.: Open Source (e.g. OSG OSM) Artificial Intelligence (e.g. ISG ENI) © ETSI All rights reserved

4 Network functions virtualization (NFV)
Software-based network functions running on standard IT hardware, for improved operational efficiency and reuse of a single platform for different applications, users and tenants. Increased automation: e.g. deployment, life-cycle management of network functions and networks. Realizing the network on demand. Easing “network elasticity”, with scaling features easily adapting the network and resource usage to needed capacity. Increased speed of time to market by minimizing the network operator cycle of innovation. A software-based network enabling novel business models and additional innovation. And eventually, reducing capex and opex. The value of NFV and ETSI ISG NFV An interoperable architecture framework for the management and orchestration of infrastructure resources, VNF and Network Services (composition of VNFs). 4 © ETSI All rights reserved

6 Conclusions 5G presents a huge opportunity for the digitization of the economy and modernization of all industry sectors To achieve the full potential, all actors need to work together towards common objectives The 5G timeline is very demanding 3GPP has set detailed plans which will enable that timeline to be met ETSI addresses important building blocks to enable the full potential of 5G © ETSI All rights reserved
