3 Safety Net Inadequacy ?? ? Sources: HRSA BPHC, HP 2010

4 Safety Net Staffing Inadequacy
CHC’s: Community Health Centers Safety net facilities (e.g. dental schools, community health centers, hospital clinics and mobile vans) are few in number compared to the medical safety net (primarily because community hospital emergency rooms comprise a major component of the medical safety net, whereas emergency rooms typically only offer palliation with medication for dental complaints. In addition, there are 4x as many medical schools than dental schools. Source: Bolin & Shulman: Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved 15, 2004

5 Inequity in Disease Burden
Hispanic and African American populations have higher rates of oral disease and tooth loss than the white, non-Hispanic majority population Sources: HP2010

6 Composition of Dental Students Differs from US Population
The number of underrepresented minorities in the dental profession is significantly low compared to their proportion in the overall population (5.7% of graduate dentists are African American and 5.3% are Hispanic; These percentages are far below the percentage of African American (12%) and Hispanics (11%) in the general population) (7). Thus, patients may be faced with language barriers and/or cultural incompetence. Source: Population: US Census 2000; Dental Students: ADA 2003

7 Race/Ethnicity of Dentists Impacts Patients Served
Patients Treated White Black Hispanic Asian Dentists White 77% Black 62% Hispanic 45% Asian % Population 69% 12% 13% 4% The number of underrepresented minorities in the dental profession is significantly low compared to their proportion in the overall population (5.7% of graduate dentists are African American and 5.3% are Hispanic; These percentages are far below the percentage of African American (12%) and Hispanics (11%) in the general population) (7). Thus, patients may be faced with language barriers and/or cultural incompetence. Mike, this can be placed on the site in association with the above bullet. Basically the graph indicates that minorities tend to be treated by dentists of their own race/ethnicity…..thus driving home the point that we need more underrepresented minorites in the filed of dentistry.
