the large intestine? Why do you think the rate of obesity began to sky rocket in the 80’s? (commercialization/technology)

2 Chapter 32: The Digestive System
Section: Disorders and Diseases of the Digestive System Student Learning Objective: You should be able to describe some of the common disorders and diseases of the digestive system. Essential Question: What are the major disorders and diseases of the digestive system?

3 Vocabulary: Inflammatory Bowel Disease Periodontal disease
Crohn’s Disease Gingivitis Ulcerative colitis Constipation Hepatitis Diarrhea Pancreatitis Gastroesophageal reflux Gall stones gastroenteritis Cholecystectomy

4 Periodontal disease. Gum disease Most common=Gingivitis.

5 Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Unprotected esophagus is injured by the acidic fluid from the stomach Causes include pregnancy, hiatal hernia, LES relaxation

6 Break in the lining of the stomach Bacteria-cause
Ulcers-Peptic Ulcers Break in the lining of the stomach Bacteria-cause

7 Ulcerative Colitis-Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Affects colon Ulcers, open sores Watery/bloody diarrhea Autoimmune Unknown cause Malabsorption

8 Crohn’s Disease-Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Affects mouth to anus Ulcers, open sores can extend through the entire wall Abd pain/watery diarrhea Genetic/environmental factors Unknown cause

9 Gastroenteritis. Inflammation of the stomach/intestines Symptoms=nausea, vomitting, pain, diarrhea rotavirus

10 Constipation/Diarrhea.
Waste spends too much time in the colon Waste abnormally watery, does not spend enough time in the colon

11 Hepatitis. Inflammation/damage to the liver >6 months chronic Jaundice=bilirubin from RBC desctruction usually released into the bile

12 Pancreatitis. Enzymes activated inside the pancreas prematurely
Most common cause alcohol Also caused by gallstones Replenish fluids/pain medication
