5. George Orwell British journalist, author
Born in India in 1903, his real name is Eric Arthur Blair
Father was a British civil servant with whom he never had a strong relationship. Orwell’s mother brought him and his sister to England a year after his birth.
Sickly child, often was alone and writing. His first poem was published at age 11.
Attended boarding school, exposing him to the English class system. He was very bright, but his family could not afford a college education.
Joined India Imperial Police Force, resigned in 1922.
Did not find immediate success as a writer, took on pseudonym “George Orwell” as to not embarrass his family.
Began writing in response to totalitarian governments (Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini)
Animal Farm and 1984 gave financial stability for the first time
Died of tuberculosis in 1950

A novel of psychological terror that warns us about a future where the government controls everything and individuals are completely stripped of their rights
Written in 1949 as a response to hatred of political authority.
A negative utopia: a dystopia
The main character, Winston Smith, tries to rebel against society
He begins his rebellion with the simple act of writing in his journal, which is illegal

7. What is this world like?
All citizen’s actions are monitored by telescreens, which are present in all homes and workplaces.
The government is represented by Big Brother, a figure who “sees everything.”
Laws are enforced by the Thought Police, who arrest and “vaporize” anyone who even thinks disruptive thoughts.
History is constantly rewritten so the predictions of Big Brother can never be wrong, and it appears as though Big Brother is the source of everything.
Citizens are constantly asked to show their allegiance by engaging in rallies and meetings to support Big Brother.
Hatred for the enemies of Big Brother is encouraged through propaganda
According to Big Brother, the society of Oceania is constantly at war with other countries (Eurasia and Eastasia)
