2 A long time ago … More than 400 years ago King James 1 passed laws against the Catholics.

3 treason The Catholics felt the king didn’t treat them fairly so a group of Catholics decided to kill him.

4 Gunpowder Plot The men knew when the King would be at the Houses of Parliament in London. They decided to fill the cellars below with barrels of gunpowder and blow the Houses of Parliament up.

5 Guy Fawkes One of the men was called Guy Fawkes.

6 5 th November On the 5 th November when Guy Fawkes was looking after the barrels and waiting to light the fuse he was found by the guards.

7 bonfires King James was so pleased he hadn’t been blown up that he said there should be bonfires every year.

8 Burning the guy People make models of Guy Fawkes and put on top of the bonfires to burn

9 Remember, remember Children learn a poem to help them remember: Remember, remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason, why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.

10 Fireworks! Fireworks are set off to celebrate.

11 Keep fireworks in a closed box. Stand well back. Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode. Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. Children should always be supervised by an adult around fireworks. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. Put sparklers in a bucket of water to make sure they are out! Never give sparklers to a child under five. Keep pets indoors. Follow the Firework Safety Code
