2. Where They Lived
The Kumeyaay homelands were located in Southern California.
The Kumeyaay spoke a dialect from the Hokan branch of the Yuman language.
Beaches and salt marshes lined the Pacific Coast.

3. Homes The Kumeyaay had both summer and winter villages.
Access to food and water was very important when choosing a village location.
The Kumeyaay constructed the frame of the dome with willow poles.

4. Family Life
When a Kumeyaay woman married, she left home to live with her husband. She kept her family name. However, the couple’s children took their father’s family name.
The Kumeyaay men built tools, hunted, and prepared fields for gardening.

5. Clothing Kumeyaay clothing was made from plants and animals.
Women wore skirts woven from willow bark.
Men wore waist cords made from plant fibers.

6. Foods The Kumeyaay fished, hunted, gardened, and gathered food.
Men used bows and arrows to hunt deer, antelope and bighorn sheep.
Using traps or snares, the men captured badgers, rabbit, rodents, and birds.

7. Society
Kumeyaay society was divided into bands, which owned certain territories within tribal land.
Between 5 and 15 family groups belonged to a band.
Each band had its own Kwaaypaay, or leader.

8. Crafts Kumeyaay women made baskets and pottery.
Baskets patterns often included butterflies, flowers, deer, and rattlesnakes.
Kumeyaay women used seed-beater baskets to gather seeds.
