4 Early History of Rome Italian Peninsula in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea Inhabited by Etruscans in the North, Greeks in the South, and Italic peoples in central Italy Etruscans were advanced, learned writing, art, technology from Greeks Latins were one of the many Italic peoples, learned from Etruscans

5 Early History of Rome According to legend, a Trojan man named Aeneas fled the Trojan War and settled in Italy to become the ancestor of the Romans. According to another legend, two brothers, Romulus and Remus, were sons of a princess and the war god Mars who were raised by wolves, and in adulthood, Romulus founded the city of Rome and started a kingdom there in 753 BCE.

6 Kingdom to Republic Romans elected their kings, and later kings were not Roman but Etruscan Last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, used violence to maintain power King’s son, Sextus Tarquinus, raped a Roman noblewoman, Lucretia, who killed herself 509 BCE: Romans angrily exiled the King and vowed to never have a king again
