1 Cell Biology: Aerobic Respiration
Learning Intention: Give the summary word equation for aerobic respiration Describe aerobic respiration.

2 Respiration involves a series of enzyme-controlled reactions to completely break down glucose. This requires aerobic conditions (the presence of oxygen). Energy Glucose Oxygen Carbon dioxide Water + + + This is the basic word equation for the process of Aerobic Respiration.

3 Stage 1: The breakdown of Glucose
Takes place in the cytoplasm. Does not require oxygen. 2 ATP molecules are formed. Glucose Pyruvate 2 ADP + 2 Pi 2 ATP

4 Stage 1: The breakdown of Pyruvate
Takes place in the mitochondria. Requires oxygen. 36 ATP molecules are formed. Water 36 ADP + 36 Pi 36 ATP Pyruvate Carbon dioxide + The complete breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide and water yields 38 ATP.

5 Complete Aerobic Respiration
Glucose Pyruvate 2 ADP + 2 Pi 2 ATP Water 36 ADP + 36 Pi 36 ATP Pyruvate Carbon dioxide +

6 Measuring the rate of respiration in animals
Coloured water Organism Sodium hydroxide (absorb CO2) The only air available to the organism is inside the tube. As the organism uses up oxygen, the volume of gas inside the tube goes down. The coloured water is pulled downwards. The distance that the liquid moves in a set time can be used to measure the rate of respiration.

7 Measuring the rate of respiration in germinating seeds
