Grade 3M Assembly 1st of February 2018

Welcome Close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the Rainforest. Imagine you are there. Which animals can you hear?

Location of the Rainforest

Location The rainforests are located near the equator.
The reason they grow here is due to the amount of rainfall and sunshine these places receive. They are found in the following countries: Central America: Parts of Peru and Brazil-The Amazon Central Africa: The Congo and Madagascar Southern Asia: Malaysia and Borneo Australia: Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland

Layers of the Rainforest

Layers There are four main layers, the emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor (from highest to lowest).  Rainforest layers are natural dividers that happen at different heights above the forest floor. Each layer of the rainforest forms a habitat for a different group of plants and animals.

Layers Emergent Layer. These giant trees thrust above the canopy layer and have huge mushroom-shaped tops. Canopy Layer. In the rainforest most plant and animal life is not found on the forest floor, but in the leafy world known as the canopy. The canopy, which may be over 30 m above the ground, is made up of the overlapping branches and leaves of rainforest trees.

Layers Understory. Several meters below the bottom of the canopy is the understory,  made up of young trees and shrubs. The understory varies a lot from rainforest to rainforest. It is darker, there is less wind, and it is more humid than the canopy above it.

Layers Even though it is dark there, the rainforest floor is an important part of the forest ecosystem. The forest floor is where decay happens. Also, many of the largest rainforest animals are found on the forest floor.

Animals of the Rainforest
We all live in the Rainforest. We are beautiful animals. Listen to learn more about us! Jaguar Tapir Anaconda Gorilla

Jaguar facts  Jaguars are the largest of South America’s big cats and the third largest cats in the world.  The name jaguar comes from the Native American word yaguar, which means “he who kills with one leap.”  Their fur is usually tan or orange with black spots, called “rosettes” because they are shaped like roses.  Jaguars live alone and mark their territory with their waste or by clawing trees. Jaguars are mammals. They are carnivores and eat a diet rich in meat and fish. They can live to be 12 to 15 years old in the wild.

Tapir Facts A relative of the rhino, the Brazilian tapir is one of four species of tapir. Brazilian tapirs live near water and are capable swimmers and divers Weighing 250 kg, Brazilian tapirs measure around 2 m in length. Brazilian tapirs have brown fur with darker hair on their legs and short manes. They also have short tails.

Anaconda Facts The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world, when both weight and length are considered. It can reach a length of 9 meters and weigh up to 227 kgs The green anaconda is a member of a family of snakes called constrictors. Constrictors are not venomous snakes. They don't kill prey by delivering venom through a bite. Instead, they wrap their bodies around their prey and squeeze until it stops breathing. Anaconda jaws are held together with stretchy ligaments so they can open wide enough to swallow prey whole.

Gorilla Facts Gorillas live in family groups of about 12, led by a male.  This male is usually over a decade old and is called a "silverback" due to the silvery colored hair on his back. An adult male gorilla is the size of a human, but three times as heavy (they weigh up to 600 pounds). Although gorillas are considered plant eaters, their favorite food is termites.  When not eating termites, gorillas spend most of their time feeding on fruit, as many as 100 different types of fruit! Gorillas are most active during the day, but they are shy. At night, they make nests of grass and leaves to sleep in.

If the Rainforest Could Speak
Tree speaks Frog speaks Plant speaks Reflection: Many countries have declared their deforestation a national emergency. The trees, plants and animals have no voice. Who will give them a voice? Will you? Will you speak up for the trees, plants and the animals? “Fragile” song plays and assembly ends.

Fragile Song

Fragile If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one Drying in the colour of the evening sun Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away But something in our minds will always stay Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetime's argument That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star, like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are, how fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star, like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are, how fragile we are How fragile we are, how fragile we are

Thank you. Thank you for listening to our assembly. We hope it has made you think about the world we live in. We can all make a difference.
