Copy the question and answer in sentences:
How is a geological oceanographer different from a marine biologist?

4. Answer
A geological oceanographer studies the rocks and rock formations on the ocean floor.
A marine biologist studies living things in the ocean and on the shoreline.

6. Is it all the same water?
Just as the atmosphere is all the same air, but could be divided into layers based on similarities, the ocean too can be divided into five zones, based on similar characteristics.

7. The Ocean Zones
You will make a fold-up book with information about each zone and how discoveries were made.
You and a partner will share a laptop and be patient with each other since people write at different speeds.

8. Make your fold-up book.
Fold your paper in half once, as shown in the diagrams.

Paper has been folded so there are 8 boxes formed.

11. Draw over the fold lines on the front and back.

12. Label the boxes 1 to 8 on the front, and 9 to 16 on the back.

13. Write your name and period # in BOX 16.

24. Look at these graphs. Answer in box 8 – How does ocean light change as you go deeper? Which color of light goes the deepest? (Click for answers. Write words in yellow.) .
Light decreases as depth increases.
Blue light goes the deepest.

25. Take notes in box 9 -Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is the production of light by a living organism. The organism gives off light and glows.
It occurs in the Midnight Zone, Abyss and Trenches, since no sunlight reaches these zones.
Click here to see some examples of bioluminescent creatures.
Write the names of two bioluminescent creatures in box 9.

26. Box 10 – Take notes The Ocean Floor
Oceanographers discovered the shape of the ocean floor by measuring the depth of the floor in many places.
They used sonar (sound waves) and radar (radio waves) to help map the ocean floor.

27. Box 11 – Ocean Floor
Sonar is a system for detecting objects under water and for measuring the water's depth.
Sound waves are sent out from the surface. Scientists measure how long it takes the sound wave to be reflected at the bottom and to return to the surface.
They can calculate how deep the ocean is at that point, and form a map of the ocean floor.

Find someone else who is done, and quiz them. Then answer their questions.
