1 Copy this week’s agenda! Note: Test on Friday!
Walk In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. Copy this week’s agenda! Note: Test on Friday! Put HW submersible drawing in the basket RIGHT NOW!

2 Today’s Work Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 9 – get a laptop from the LSU.
Groups 5, 6, 7, and 8 – Get a laptop from the stack on the back counter. Finish your Oceans Fold-Up Book by going to this week on the webpage.

3 Walk In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box.
Copy the question and answer in sentences: How is a geological oceanographer different from a marine biologist?

4 Answer A geological oceanographer studies the rocks and rock formations on the ocean floor. A marine biologist studies living things in the ocean and on the shoreline.

5 Ocean Zones

6 Is it all the same water? Just as the atmosphere is all the same air, but could be divided into layers based on similarities, the ocean too can be divided into five zones, based on similar characteristics. Watch this video clip for an introduction to changes in the water as we go below…

7 The Ocean Zones You will make a fold-up book with information about each zone and how discoveries were made. You and a partner will share a laptop and be patient with each other since people write at different speeds.

8 Make your fold-up book. Fold your paper in half once, as shown in the diagrams.

9 Fold in half again…

10 Fold in half one last time…
Paper has been folded so there are 8 boxes formed.

11 Draw over the fold lines on the front and back.

12 Label the boxes 1 to 8 on the front, and 9 to 16 on the back.

13 Write your name and period # in BOX 16.

14 Follow the directions on each slide that follows.
Some slides tell you to take notes. Some slides are for you to read or observe. Some slides may have links to click.

15 Box 1 - The Five Ocean Zones
Make a quick sketch of this diagram in the box 1 of your fold-up book. DO NOT spend too long on the sketch! Sunlight Zone Twilight Zone Midnight Zone Abyss Trenches

16 Take notes in box 2 - Sunlight Zone
Depth of water is 0 to 300 feet Lots of sunlight 90% of marine life (fish, animals and plants) is found here Green plants grow here (can do photosynthesis) Dolphins

17 Take notes in box 3 – Twilight Zone
Depth is 300 to 3000 feet Beginning to get darker Water pressure increases, and temperature decreases Sharks live here Very little light at the bottom of this zone

18 Observe life in the Sunlight and Twilight Zones

19 Take notes in box 4 – Midnight Zone
3,000 to 10,000 feet No sunlight, completely dark Much less food and animal life Some creatures are BIOLUMINESCENT

20 Take notes in box 5 - Abyss
Abyss Very dark Scarce food supplies Organisms grow slowly High water pressure Goes to ocean floor Remains of marine life from upper zones Fewer life forms

21 Take notes in box 6 - Trenches
Trench: very deep, long “cuts” in the ocean floor Highest water pressure and freezing water temperatures Deepest point on earth: the Mariana Trench Lifeforms exist but are pretty basic and low in evolution.

22 Review - read again! Ocean Zones
Sunlight Twilight Midnight Abyss Closest to surface Lots of light 90% of marine life Green plants Water beginning to get darker Temperature decreases Pressure increases Very little light Less food Less animal life Bioluminescence Glow in the dark animals Very dark Scarce food supplies High water pressure Goes to ocean floor Remains of marine life from upper zones

23 Leave box 7 for now– JUST READ THIS SLIDE AND COME BACK IF YOU HAVE TIME TO WRITE AT THE END! Scientific Names of the Ocean Zones Write the words in yellow! Epipelagic Zone (Sunlight Zone) Mesopelagic Zone (Twilight Zone) Bathypelagic Zone (Midnight Zone) Abyssopelagic Zone (The Abyss) Hadalpelagic Zone (The Trenches)

24 Look at these graphs. Answer in box 8 – How does ocean light change as you go deeper? Which color of light goes the deepest? (Click for answers. Write words in yellow.) . Light decreases as depth increases. Blue light goes the deepest.

25 Take notes in box 9 -Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is the production of light by a living organism. The organism gives off light and glows. It occurs in the Midnight Zone, Abyss and Trenches, since no sunlight reaches these zones. Click here to see some examples of bioluminescent creatures. Write the names of two bioluminescent creatures in box 9.

26 Box 10 – Take notes The Ocean Floor
Oceanographers discovered the shape of the ocean floor by measuring the depth of the floor in many places. They used sonar (sound waves) and radar (radio waves) to help map the ocean floor.

27 Box 11 – Ocean Floor Sonar is a system for detecting objects under water and for measuring the water's depth. Sound waves are sent out from the surface. Scientists measure how long it takes the sound wave to be reflected at the bottom and to return to the surface. They can calculate how deep the ocean is at that point, and form a map of the ocean floor.

28 Box 12 – Diagram of Sonar Step 2- Detector- Picks up reflected
Sketch and label the diagram Step 2- Detector- Picks up reflected sound wave. Step 1 - Transducer – sends out sound wave

29 OCEAN FLOOR FEATURES Scientists discovered there are high and low points on the ocean floor! Sketch this in boxes 13 through 15 – Ocean Floor Draw it the best that you can! 

30 When you are done… In your notebook, write 10 quiz questions about the ocean zones, and the answers. Find someone else who is done, and quiz them. Then answer their questions.

31 Video clips – Discovery Education
If you are all done, try viewing these video clips on quiet volume: Click Kyrene Discovery Education. Search for the following clip: Layers of the Ocean Search for: Ocean Floors: Life in the Deep Zone

32 More video clips in Discovery Education
Search for: The Light Zone Search for: The Dark Zone

33 Box 16 Make sure you have written your name and period # in box 16!
