1 Annual Report on Faculty to MCEF
November, 2017

2 Number of Faculty by Type
TL faculty count stable, some drop off due to buyout SCS is an important factor in adjunct growth TL Faculty include all tenure line faculty with a primary appointment on main campus that year. Non-Tenure line include all full-time NTL faculty on the main campus including both research and teaching NTL faculty. Adjunct counts include all adjuncts who taught at least one course (not independent study) on main campus in the fall or the spring. Adjuncts also include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. All numbers exclude GU-Q, and are distinct headcounts.

3 Number of Tenure Line Faculty by Rank
Growth in the number of fulls Number of associates is steady Small drop in assistants TL Faculty include all tenure line faculty with a primary appointment on main campus. All numbers exclude GU-Q, and are distinct headcounts.

4 TL Faculty by School and Year
TL Faculty include all tenure line faculty with a primary appointment on main campus. All numbers are distinct headcounts. School affiliation is based on the primary academic appointment.

5 NTL Count by School Growth in NTL faculty count.
McCourt count doubled; includes research NTL. Non-Tenure line includes both research and teaching NTL faculty. All numbers are distinct headcounts within the school, and there is no double counting across schools. Chart excludes non-academic schools with few NTL faculty (e.g. CIED, Kennedy Institute, Academic Programs, CNDLS, OIP)

6 Instructional and Research NTL Count by School
All numbers are distinct headcounts within the school, and there is no double counting across schools. Chart excludes non-academic schools with few NTL faculty (e.g. CIED, Kennedy Institute, Academic Programs, CNDLS, OIP)

7 Adjunct Count by School
SCS, SFS account for an increase of almost 400 College has seen a drop in adjuncts Adjunct counts include all adjuncts who taught at least one course (not independent study) in the school in the fall or the spring. All numbers are distinct headcounts for the school, but in cases where an adjunct teaching in multiple schools they will be counted in each. Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Adjuncts are associated with schools based on the home school of the courses they taught.

8 Student Enrollments (UG & Graduate Classes) by Faculty Type
Student Enrollments include fall and spring enrollments in non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Enrollment counts are normalized to count 1 enrollment per 3 credits of coursework. Enrollment is also normalized so team-taught courses only count once (with course shares divided equally among faculty). Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Excludes GU-Q.

9 Student Enrollments (UG Students) by Faculty Type
Stable teaching of UGs by TL Student Enrollments include fall and spring enrollments in non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Enrollment counts are normalized to count 1 enrollment per 3 credits of coursework. Enrollment is also normalized so team-taught courses only count once (with course shares divided equally among faculty). Student level is determined by the primary program of the student. Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Excludes GU-Q.

10 Student Enrollments (Graduate Students) by Faculty Type
Adjuncts playing a major role in teaching graduate students – SCS, SFS Student Enrollments include fall and spring enrollments in non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Excludes GU-Q

11 Mean Number of Courses Taught Per Year by Faculty Type
Mean number of courses taught by TL faculty is below 3. Courses include fall and spring courses that are non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Course counts are normalized to count a 3 credit course as 1 course. Course counts are also normalized so team-taught courses only count once (with course shares divided equally among faculty). Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Faculty counts are based on distinct headcounts for main campus, and for TL and NTL include faculty not necessarily teaching. Excludes GU-Q.

12 Mean Number of Courses Taught Per Year by Faculty Type, Version 1
Large variation in NTL course load, likely based on type of courses e.g. languages. Faculty counts are based on distinct headcounts of faculty teaching the courses associated with that school. Faculty teaching courses in multiple schools are counted in all schools they teach. Courses are only counted in the school they are taught.

13 Mean Number of Student Enrollments Per Year by Faculty Type
Reflects the fact that NTLs teach more courses per year than TL. Faculty counts are based on distinct headcounts for main campus, and for TL and NTL include faculty not necessarily teaching. Excludes GU-Q.

14 Mean Number of Student Enrollments Per Year by Faculty Type
Wide variation across schools. Faculty counts are based on distinct headcounts of faculty teaching the courses associated with that school. Faculty teaching courses in multiple schools will be counted in all schools they teach within Enrollments are only counted in the school they are taught under

15 Total Student Enrollments (Graduate Students) by School
Large growth in graduate enrollments in SCS, MSB, SFS Student Enrollments include fall and spring enrollments in non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Enrollment counts are normalized to count 1 enrollment per 3 credits of coursework. Student level is determined by the primary program of the student.

16 Percentage of Courses Taught by Faculty Type
Courses include fall and spring courses that are non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Course counts are normalized to count a 3 credit course as 1 course. Course counts are also normalized so team-taught courses only count once (with course shares divided equally among faculty). Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Excludes GU-Q.

17 Course Count by Faculty Type
Courses include fall and spring courses that are non-independent study, and non-study abroad courses. Course counts are normalized to count a 3 credit course as 1 course. Course counts are also normalized so team-taught courses only count once (with course shares divided equally among faculty). Adjuncts include non-faculty GU employees who teach courses as a secondary job. Excludes GU-Q.

18 Preliminary Conclusions
TL faculty count has been mostly stable UG teaching by TL fairly stable Increase in adjunct faculty: primarily due to SCS and to some extent SFS Adjuncts teach mostly graduate students On average, TL faculty teach 2.7 courses per academic year Teaching loads for NTLs vary by schools
