Myths and Misconceptions of Hypnosis
MYTH: Hypnosis is magic and the hypnotist casts spells over their subjects with a magical object or eyes. TRUTH: Hypnosis is seemingly magical as it is powerful and highly effective. However, you are in complete control. MYTH: Hypnosis is mind control. TRUTH: Hypnosis is not imposed on people; hypnosis is a state a person does for themselves willingly. A hypnotist simply serves as a facilitator. MYTH: Hypnosis occurs in a sleep state. TRUTH: While people look like they’re asleep because their eyes are closed, they’re not asleep. In fact, hypnosis is often described as a heightened state of focused awareness.
3
When in hypnosis, you will focus inward…
4
Hypnosis puts you in a deeply relaxed state (often called trance) that feels good and is safe.
5
How the Mind Works With Hypnosis
Conscious Mind Critical Factor Subconscious/Unconscious Mind Point of Focus, Analytical, Logical Protects against perceived danger Limited to 7 to 9 bits of info at any given time Short term memory A comparing mechanism that acts like a filter between conscious and subconscious/unconscious mind Protects against unnecessary changes in beliefs and habits held in the subconscious mind
6
How the Mind Works With Hypnosis
Subconscious Mind Starts empty and is filled by experience Database of information, memories Beliefs (information accepted as true) Habits (automatic behaviors) Resists change (part of personality) Generates emotions Unlimited capacity (permanent memory} Protects against known dangers Processes millions of bits of information at any given time Unconscious Mind Body consciousness Instinctual knowledge Change is limited Generates Feelings Protects you from pain, illness and injury by using the immune system and reflexes
7
The Conscious Mind has the ability to look, listen, learn, reason, judge, analyze, criticize, and accept or reject. It looks outside the self for success.
8
The Subconscious/Unconscious Mind functions at a deeper level, and processes millions of bits of information at any given time. 5-10% Conscious Mind 90-95% Subconscious Mind (Subconscious…Unconscious…Superconscious)
9
The Subconscious/Unconscious warehouses all data, memories, and emotions, and runs all biological functions.
10
Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor through the establishment of acceptable selective thinking. The establishment of acceptable selective thinking=following initial instructions during hypnotic induction. Bypass of critical factor=the effect that hypnosis has on your ability to accept and use the hypnotic suggestions.
11
Hypnosis accesses the subconscious/unconscious mind, which is part of our consciousness that defines who we are and what we do on a consistent basis (personality). It starts off empty when we are first developed, before we were born, and then starts gathering information from our experiences and perceptions.
12
The information gathered is held in our permanent memory, containing all the information that we gather throughout our lives. It is like a computer database. The permanent memory seems to be unlimited and can retain information throughout our lives (unless the brain is damaged by physical damage or disease) Some of the information in the subconscious mind is turned into habits and cause us to react automatically to people and circumstances in our lives. This information is also sometimes turned into beliefs (things that we think to be true, even though we may not have definite proof).
13
The Subconscious Mind resists change (which is mostly a beneficial trait for us). The SM enables us to maintain a consistent personality throughout our lives. BUT, it can cause problems when we decide that a change in how we think, feel, or behave is in order. THIS IS WHERE HYPNOSIS comes in!
14
The Subconscious can and will act out any image, idea, or concept you plant and habitually nurture. (“What you think about you bring about.” “What you focus on grows.”)
15
Hypnosis is a fast neuronal (brain-based) process.
16
Hypnosis creates new neural pathways and connections to reprogram old behaviors.
17
Humans have three brains. (Cool, right?)
18
Hypnosis helps people quickly access memories and emotions
Hypnosis helps people quickly access memories and emotions. (The most intelligent and creative people go into hypnotic trance fast and deep.)
19
INTERESTINGLY… Everyone goes into hypnosis on a daily basis; it naturally occurs everyday!
20
In hypnosis/trance your conscious, analytical mind becomes quieter…
21
Hypnosis may evoke a mentally relaxed, safe & happy place…
22
All people experience hypnosis differently
All people experience hypnosis differently. (Now, there is no right or wrong way to go into hypnosis)
23
For many people, the state of hypnosis simply feels like closing your eyes for a good few moments.
(Go ahead and test it out…close your eyes now!)
24
And, the subconscious has all of the answers to make you feel better, do better, and be better (happier).
25
Your subconscious really LOVES you
Your subconscious really LOVES you! It never sabotages your external efforts…without a good reason or cause (positive intention)
26
As children (and adults), we sometimes put up walls to protect ourselves from an overwhelming emotional world.
27
But those same “walls” that once protected us…
28
…often times block us as adult…
29
Fortunately, you have the power to destroy these walls (remove emotional blocks) from within.
30
When your subconscious mind is in alignment with your conscious mind, you are instantly healthier, happier, and more successful!
31
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
As long as you follow my simple instructions, no power on earth, outside yourself, can keep you from being hypnotized and creating the change you want.
32
Hypnosis & Neuroscience Basics
Change starts with a desire, a goal, envisioning success & all the benefits, a commitment, a plan, focus, action and repetition = new neural networks What you focus on grows, and what you think about you bring about! NEURONS THAT FIRE TOGETHER, WIRE TOGETHER Always focus on WHAT you want (rather than what you don’t want). Imagine the success with all your senses. LIVE YOUR SUCCESS. Rinse and repeat, over and over …A NEW HABIT & A NEW NORMAL RESULTS
33
Three Simple Stages of Hypnosis:
Do I have your permission to: 1. Help you relax your body? 2. Help you relax your mind? 3. Help bring you deeper in hypnosis? …at which point your subconscious mind will be totally open, receptive, and responsive to my gentle commands and easy suggestions Are you ready to be hypnotized?
