The concept behind Smoke Detectors. DONE BY MAXINE LIVERAS
2
Smoke Detectors. Smoke detectors are an example of the usage of the radioactive emitted Alpha particles, in particular Americium 241. Americium is used because of its properties of causing an intense ionisation of matter and also because of its less detrimental harm when in contact to human tissue. Smoke detectors installed in homes monitor the surroundings in case of a fire outbreak which enables fire services to be prompt on scene to monitor the area.

Compartments of smoke detectors. Smoke detectors has 3 parts: Ionization chamber The ionization chamber basically contains the Alpha releasing particle, Americium 241. Because of its property of being heavy it ionizes well with matter and thus creates enough voltage to be transmitted via the external circuit. Current detector. Enough voltage that is detected by the current detector keeps the alarm turned off. In the event of a smoke, the ionisation chamber ionizes less because the smoke particles tend to absorb air which decrease the amount of ionized air reaching the current detector.

Continue.. Alarm The last compartment is the alarm. Basically the alarm goes off once the current detector detects less voltage in the circuit due to the presence of smoke particles.
