4. JOHN F. KENNEDY JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY SERVED: 1961-1963
PARTY: DEMOCRAT
PUSHED FOR PASSAGE OF A CIVIL RIGHTS BILL
OVERSAW THE UNITED STATES DURING THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
Assassinated in 1963 in Dallas.

5. COMING HOMME
After the dropping of the nuclear bomb in 1945, WWII ended, and by July 1946, President TRUMAN began DEMOBILIZING the military, meaning that he brought the troops home.
WWII veterans feared coming home and not BEING ABLE TO FIND WORK, and the United States Congress acted on that fear.
Congress passed the GI BILL, which provided money for returning veterans to be able to go to COLLEGE and to have their LIVING EXPENSES paid for.
People feared the GREAT DEPRESSION would return after the war ended, but it did not. Prices on goods did INCREASE by a lot, but jobs were available to help folks pay for it.

6. THE 1950s ECONOMIC BOOM
DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER is elected President in 1952.
The United States economy is growing and really EXPLODING.
During the 1950s, young adults moved into the SUBURBS of cities, which made it easy to travel into the cities for work.
After WWII, the United States saw a spike in the amount of babies being born between 1946 and This was known as the BABY BOOM.
Many of those that moved, moved from the Northeastern US to the SUNBELT, which is the name for California, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
Americans were helped by the creation of the INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM, which allowed people to MOVE about more freely because it made driving quicker.

7. CONSUMERISM AND FAMILY LIFE
Families were earning more money in the 1950s, which led many to believe that they could buy whatever they wanted (like in the 1920s). A lot of them bought things, using CREDIT.
During the 1950s, MEDIAN FAMILY INCOME (the average amount each family earned in one year) rose from $3,319 to $5,427.
People started buying as much as they could buy, a trend known as CONSUMERISM.
APPLIANCES topped the list of things that families would buy. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and electric stoves were among the most sought after goods.

8. ROCK-AND-ROLL
People began to watch television, and many television shows come up, such as I Love Lucy and Leave it to Beaver.
Rock-and-roll music begins to spring up, and would start a music revolution that would carry on through until today. These rock songs were simple, and less meaningful than those that were written from the 1960s to today.
