7 Leah. The woman with a tough life.

8

9 Who was Leah in the Bible?
Was Leah good or bad? Why many talk about Rachel but not Leah? This morning I would do the opposite from many, I will skip Rachel and talk about Leah. I do believe there are a lot thing we can learn from the “unloved woman”.

10 Leah was the oldest daughter of Laban and sister of Rachel.
They were from Syria or Haran back then. First wife of Jacob by the deceiving actions of Laban. She was taken by “compromise and not by love” A woman with a very fruitful womb. A woman very submissive to her husband and a woman with the desire to serve.

11 When Rachel came into the picture brothers, she took second place…
Leah has a very difficult life, but she basically handle her adversity very well. When Rachel came into the picture brothers, she took second place… That is very hard for a woman that’s been filling that house with many babies!

12 She was the ugly duckling sister.
Leah Had Very Serious Problems! She was the ugly duckling sister. Genesis 29:16-17 [16] Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. [17] Leah's eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. Genesis 29: 17 And Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful of form and face. NASB Genesis 29:17 And Leah's eyes were clouded, but Rachel was fair in face and form. BBE Genesis 29:17 There was no sparkle in Leah’s eyes, but Rachel had a beautiful figure and a lovely face. NLT

13 She was the ugly duckling sister.
Some have suggest that probably she was cross- eyed. Her sister was not an average, but she was beautiful.

14 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
Leah was openly misused by her father. Genesis 29:20-26 [20] So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her. [21] Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her." [22] And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast. [23] Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. [24] And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid. [25] So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?" [26] And Laban said, "It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. She was Marry without giving any choice. She was “push off” to a husband who wanted her sister.

15 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She was part of a unfortunate marriage. Genesis 29:27-30 [27] Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years." [28] Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. [29] And Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid. [30] Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban still another seven years. The bible is very clear to say that there was no love involve for Leah. She did not have her husband for herself for even a week.

16 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She face life long humiliation. Genesis 29:30 [30] Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban still another seven years. Genesis 33:2 [2] And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. She was also second choice. She was always “excess baggage”

17 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She had to use her children to gain her husband acceptance. Genesis 29:31-35 [31] When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. [32] So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, "The LORD has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me." [33] Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also." And she called his name Simeon. [34] She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore his name was called Levi. [35] And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now I will praise the LORD." Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

18 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She was the object of her sister animosity. Genesis 30:1 [1] Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I die!" Throughout life. Specially at time when it should have been special for Leah. Don’t help God, this is not God’s plan for marriage, the Bible is clear: 1 man + 1 woman FOR… A WHILE? (LIFE)

19 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She has a very abnormal family situation. Genesis 30:8-9 [8] Then Rachel said, "With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed." So she called his name Naphtali. [9] When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife. [14] Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes." [15] But she said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes also?" And Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes." [16] When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son's mandrakes." And he lay with her that night.

20 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She has a very abnormal family situation. Child bearing became a commotion in the home. Had to bargain for husband affection. Had to raise her children in an abnormal competitive situation. Was made to understand that her child-bearing ability was her only worth!

21 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She made her situation worse, by succumbing to jealousy. Genesis 30:9-11 [9] When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife. [10] And Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. [11] Then Leah said, "A troop comes!" So she called his name Gad.

22 Leah Had Very Serious Problems!
She made her situation worse, by succumbing to jealousy. She had to wait most of her life for any retribution. She outlived her sister. Genesis 35:16-20 [16] Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. [17] Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear; you will have this son also." [18] And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin. [19] So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). [20] And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
