1 Replacement of Vechicle Bridge over Spring Creek Centre County, PA
Design Project #1 Replacement of Vechicle Bridge over Spring Creek Centre County, PA Introduction to Engneering Design EDGSN 100 Section #001 Team “Four Horsemen” Design Team 2 Jinzhen Hu Zixuan Feng Zeynep Okul Praakriti Bhatnagar Presented to: Prof. Berezniak 2017

2 Statement of the Problem
A 100 year flood event destroyed the existing Bridge. The bridge is vital for providing access to the medical center for the regional residents. Two problems: Disruption of daily usage for the regional residents & Disruption of direct access of first-responder vehicles to the residents.

3 Project Objective PennDOT Engineering District 2-0 has implemented a fast-track project to expedite the design and building of a new vehicle bridge over Spring Creek.

4 Required Design Criteria
The bridge will be built on standard abutments, and have no pier. It will have the ability to take the load of two AASHTO H trucks, one in each lane. It will be 20 meters above the ground, and the deck will span 40 meters across one end to the other. The deck will be meters thick and be made of medium strength concrete as the preferred material.

5 The Technical Approach Phase 1: Economic Efficiency
We used Engineering Encounters Bridge Design 2016 (EEBD 2016) for the estimation design. 1.The software applied a load to the bridge to determine if the design could withstand the expected load upon the bridge. 2.The software was able to display the estimated cost report, the load test results and showed bridge member details. This data was used to analyze the results and help to determine which bridge was the most structurally efficient.

6 The Technical Approach Phase 2: Structural Efficiency
Prototype Warren and Howe truss bridges were constructed by each design team using a maximum of 60 Popsicle sticks, white elmer’s glue, and hot glue for the struts and floor beams. The constructed prototypes had the following dimensions: 13.5 inches in length, 4.5 inches in width, and 4 inches in height. Each prototype bridge was load tested using a suspended mass from the center of the prototype, and more mass was added until the stress was too great and the bridge failed.

7 The Results Phase 1: Economic Efficiency
Final Cost of the Howe Truss Bridge Design : $ 234,909.66 Final Cost of the Warren Truss Bridge Design : $ 195,327.93

8 The Results Phase 2: Structural Efficiency
Final Load Test of the Howe Bridge : 51 lb Actual Weight of the Howe Bridge : lb Final Load Test of the Warren Bridge: 71 lb Actual Wight of the Wareen Bridge: lb 281 361

9 The Best Solution $ 234,909.66 $ 195,327.93 281 361 Due to the significant differences between the structural efficiency and the economic efficiency, Warren Truss bridge should be the best solution of our design group.

10 Our Conclusions PennDOT Engineering District 2-0 has implemented a fast-track project to expedite the design and building of a new vehicle bridge over Spring Creek. Designing and building this new bridge over Spring Creek was important for the local residents of the area to have a direct route to Nittany Medical Center. Based on the results of structural efficiency and economic efficiency, the Warren Truss Bridge is the better option compared to a Howe Truss Bridge.

11 Our Recommendations The next step to complete the final bridge design is to put our design to action. The bridge should be built as soon as possible in order to benefit the local residents and resume usual traffic.

12 In Closing We would like to thank PennDOT 2-0 for sponsoring this project. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to design this bridge. Not only do bridges connect places, they connect people.
