1 The presence of a patch of hypertrichosis overlying the mid-lower back (“faun tail nevus”) may signal the presence of spina bifida occulta, diastematomyelia, or duplication or tethering of the spinal cord. A thorough neurologic investigation is warranted in such cases. CNS lesions of this type may eventually lead to a neurologic defect and require neurosurgical correction. The simultaneous presence of other skin lesions, such as lipoma, hemangioma or port-wine stain, increases the possibility of a spinal cord abnormality.
