7 Research Supports Board-certification
New Research: Washington state: “[Board-] certified teachers are more effective than non-certified teachers with similar experience,” according to researchers Cowan and Goldhaber. Their findings suggest NBCTs produce gains of “approximately 2 weeks of additional learning in elementary classrooms and middle school reading classrooms and about 1.5 months of additional learning in middle school math classrooms (Cowan & Goldhaber, 2015). North Carolina Research: Charlotte, NC: “We found that NBCTs were significantly more effective...than their non-NBCT counterparts in several EOC tested courses: Algebra II, Biology, Civics and Economics, Chemistry, and Geometry” (Salvador, Baxter (2010). 27 Scoring Assessment Center (Component 1) – 40%
ePortfolio (Components 2, 3, and 4) – 60% Differentiation in Instruction (C2) – 25% Teaching Practice and Learning Environment (C3) – 50% Reflective and Effective Practitioner (C4) – 25%

28 Retake Policy You have up to two retake attempts for each component, and you can retake at any time during the five-year window, retake years do not have to be consecutive. You can have a year when you take or retake no components; however, it does not extend your three-year window to initially attempt each of the four components or the five-year window within which certification can be achieved. For Component 1, candidates can elect to retake any combination of the three constructed response items and/or the selected response part for each of the two retake attempts allowed at any time during the five-year window. The highest numeric score – whether it is the initial attempt or a retake score other than Not-scorable (NS) due to disqualification case or due to a portfolio component overlap with a previous submission – will be used to compute your total weighted scaled score. The FAQs and links to the new scoring guide can be found online at boardcertifiedteachers.org/first-time-candidates. 27

29 Renewal As an NBCT, you must complete the Certification Renewal process before your certification expiration date and may only renew certification in your original certificate area. You are offered two opportunities to apply for certification renewal, with the first application window opening late in the eighth year of your current certification and the second opening late in the ninth year. Recent change: The National Board has revised its policy for maintenance of certification (MOC). Once introduced in 2021, the National Board will no longer extend certificates through the current 10-year renewal process. To learn more about MOC, visit our website at This new policy is aligned with the movement of 40 state licensure systems to a five-year renewal period, but also reflects the National Board’s effort to make certification more affordable and efficient for all teachers, so that that it can become the norm in the profession. If you certify prior to 2017, National Board Certification is awarded for a period of up to 10 years. National Board has revised its policy for Maintenance of Certification, and will require Board-certified teachers to demonstrate their knowledge and skills every five years. (Adopted February 2015) Recent change: The National Board has revised its policy for maintenance of certification (MOC). Once introduced in 2021, the National Board will no longer extend certificates through the current 10-year renewal process. To learn more about MOC, visit our website at
