1 Analysis workshop 3 Elena Raviola

2 The analysis process CODING – iterative and comparative process
Invivo and grounded coding (close to the material) More open first and then selective coding Constructing categories, gathering some of the similar or related codes Relating categories to each other MEMOING Writing memos all the way to keep track Reference: Charmaz, K. (2006). Constructing grounded theory. London: Sage. In interaction with theory

3 Purpose of today Training at constructing categories
Brainstorming about wider categories and how they relate to each other

4 You will be working with another group

6 Exercise Based on the codes you have identified so far, construct a list of the codes Construct categories based on these codes - Which codes go under which categories? Try to brainstorm about what theoretical concepts could be relevant and how they could be used in relation to your concepts Discuss your categories and theoretical connections with your partner group and help them in their theorizing Write a 1-page memo in which you summarize what you have done. It is good if you write here also questions you have in your own theorizing process.

7 Keep in mind that While you construct categories, you might want and need to go back to the coding (if you realize that you have coded too broad) Some codes might be important even if they are ”isolated” (do not fit in a concept) You can find some sort of puzzle in the material that require to bring two theories or theoretical perspectives together in order to make sense of the material In those cases you need to be careful at what perspectives you bring together and how you do that You will need to reformulate your research question in a more precise way based on what you can ”find” In this question, you can use theoretical concepts or words that hint at a certain theoretical perspective
