Authentic Educational Activities for the Music Classroom
Ellen Owen Keeping It REAL Conference August 18, 2017

“From music theory notation to understanding cultural connections of music, there is much that can be targeted in the music classroom. PBL projects create the need to know critical content through an authentic purpose.”

Performance is the essence of the music classroom
Performance is the essence of the music classroom. However, performances can have a variety of focuses, depending on what standard is being targeted. In addition, not every assessment for a PBL project in the music classroom needs to be a performance. PBL can help focus your instruction, build authenticity and create purpose and relevance for reluctant students in your classroom.

Guiding Questions for Designing A PBL in the Music Classroom
• What prerequisite knowledge and skills are students expected to have? • What are the learning goals that students will be expected to achieve? • In what real-world situations would students apply this learning to solve a problem or create something new?
