Hot Dogs and Buns Introduction to Multiples

Clip from “Father of the Bride”

Challenge! If hotdogs come in packs of 8 and buns come in packs of 12, how many packs of each will you need to buy to come out even? Take a minute and see if you can find a way to figure this out.

Finding multiples Definition of “Multiple”: what happens when you multiply a number x1, x2, x3, x4, etc.. For example: multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10… multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, etc.. multiples of 4? 5?

Least Common Multiple To find the Least Common Multiple (LCM), find the multiples of 2 numbers and choose the first one they both have in common. Think back to the hot dog and bun problem: 8 hot dogs in a pack, but 12 buns in a pack 24 is the Least Common Multiple – that would be 3 packs of hot dogs and 2 packs of buns! Packet Unit 2 x1 x2 x3 Hot dogs 8 16 24 Buns 12 36
