1 Sky Diving Motion Analysis

2 Skydiving - Watch the Video
Watch the first 30s of this video: Note the location of the timer along the bottom, the altitude in meters up the side, and (optionally) the speed bottom right

3 Skydiving - Collect Data
Work in pairs - one person plays and pauses the video, the second person puts the data into a spreadsheet. Go here to get a copy a suitable spreadsheet or make your own. Print off two copies of the graph and glue into your book. Record the altitude at the times shown in the spreadsheet. This will give a good level of detail at key points.

4 Skydiving - Motion Analysis
Glue in your graph (or the graph provided). Analyse graph: For the four key sections of the graph draw a straight line or smooth curve. Explain what is happening at each section and why it changes Draw forces: For the four key sections sketch labelled force diagrams showing the relative sizes of the forces at those points. IGNORE HORIZONTAL FORCES (eg side wind forces)

5 Skydiving - estimating net force (extension!)
Calculate the constant speed before and after the parachute is released Estimate how long it took to change speed Use the equation below to calculate the acceleration acceleration = change in speed ÷ time Estimate the mass of a man and parachute Use Fnet = m x a to calculate the net force acting then work out the weight force and thus the drag force of the parachute
