BELL WORK: Copy and answer the question below:

Warm Up Read the first paragraph of “To Transcribe or Translate? That is the question…” and underline/highlight key terms, gene expression and environmental factors.

Cornell Notes Title: Differentiation Date: 10/27 Page: 44 Standard: Identify and Ilustrate changes in DNA and evaluate the significance of these changes EQ: How do cells become different from one another?

Videos

What are stem cells? Ted Talk

How do stem cells work? Stem Cell research

So does a heart cell have the same DNA as an eye cell??
YES

Well How Are they Different?
They Express different genes!

But what factors can affect gene expression?
In other words, what can make cells express different genes?

Temperature

Available Water Phenotypes are always affected by their environment. In buttercup (Ranunculus peltatus), leaves below water-level are finely divided and those above water-level are broad, floating, photosynthetic leaf-like leaves. Siamese cats are darker on their extremities, due to temperature effects on phenotypic expression. Expression of phenotype is a result of interaction between genes and environment. Siamese cats and Himalayan rabbits both animals have dark colored fur on their extremities. This is caused by an allele that controls pigment production being able only to function at the lower temperatures of those extremities. Environment determines the phenotypic pattern of expression. Leaves above the water are broad, but below the water are finely divided.

pH (acidity) Acidic soil produces blue flowers and Alkaline soil produces pink.

Write a one sentence summary explaining the relationship between gene expression and environmental factors Debrief
