2 I. The Holy Spirit’s Mission
A. The Holy Spirit was active in the creation of the universe. (Gn 1:1-2) B. We believe the Holy Spirit was at work throughout the history of the Jewish people. (Old Testament) 1. spoke through the prophets 2. not many direct references in Old Testament

A few references to the Holy Spirit in the New Testament 1. Luke’s Gospel—known as Gospel of the Holy Spirit 2. Wherever you find the Son you find the Spirit—share the same mission.

4 II. The Holy Spirit and Pentecost
A. Acts of the Apostles (2:2-8) records the Pentecost—coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. B. Pentecost—Church celebrates approximately 50 days after Easter. 1. Birthday of Catholic Church 2. Apostles received courage to go out and preach the message of Jesus and baptize new believers.

C. Therefore, the mission of the Holy Spirit and the Church are fused together. 1. Holy Spirit directs Church

6 III. Titles and Symbols A. John’s Gospel—Jesus calls Holy Spirit Paraclete or Advocate: One who stands by your side, a helper, supporter, comforter. B. Paul’s Letters—Holy Spirit is identified with the work of God the Father and Jesus the Son 1. “Promise of the Spirit”, “Spirit of Christ”, “Spirit of God”, “Spirit of adoption”, “Spirit of glory”

8 IV. Gifts of the Holy Spirit
A. Confirmation—we receive Holy Spirit in a deeper, more profound way. B. Gifts of Holy Spirit help us to strengthen your bond with the Church and help you to witness to your faith in both words and deeds. C. Seven Gifts (7 symbolizes fullness or completion – Isaiah 11:2-3) – All the gifts God gives us to live a good and holy life
