School curriculums changed to emphasize math and science Advanced Research Projects Agency created in 1958 Make the U.S. Dept. of Defense more high-level and technology based NASA was created The “Space Race” against the Soviets begins

5 Advanced Research Projects Agency
1969 Created a state-of-the-art, early-warning network to guard against Soviet nuclear bomber attack. Named APRANET Released to the public in 1989 and renamed Internet.

6 So--Who created the Internet?
U.S. Government Dept. of Defense 1st called ARPANET

7 What is the Internet? Largest computer network in the world connecting millions of computers. In 2009, there were over 1.7 billion Internet users. This is over ¼ of the world’s population. Wow!

8 Who is in charge of the Internet?
Nobody. There is no direct authority of the Internet. If something online is illegal, It is up to someone to report it to the website owner or their local police.

10 Is the Internet the same thing as the www?
No the World Wide Web (www) is a part of the Internet. It is the biggest part of the Internet and the most known but there are other parts of the Internet (see the next slide). World Wide Web

11 What else can the Internet do then?
Peer-to-peer file sharing Virtual private networks Encrypted financial transactions Internet phones (Vonage) Instant messaging (like AIM) Some integrate with the web to a greater or lesser degree.

12 How do you get on the Internet:
ISP—Internet Service Provider A company that connects you to the internet usually for a monthly fee Comcast AT & T Verizon Earthlink Internet Browser A software program that lets you view www documents Internet Explorer Safari Mozilla Firefox Modem A device that allows computers to connect and send data to each other. Dial Up (outdated) High Speed Cable DSL Tethering (using your cell phone as a modem) Mobile Modems (AirCards) Wireless Network Adapter Satellite

14 How to Read a URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
World Wide Web Hypertext Transfer Protocol—the language computers use to talk to web servers Domain Name—personal address of the website Domain Extension—can tell you a lot about the owner of the site

15 Domain Extensions—they tell a lot
.com = commercial .gov = government .edu = educational .info = information *usually spam or for marketing .org = organization .net = network .biz = small business .tv=multimedia/entertainment .mil = military .co = company (in the United Kingdom) .mobi = mobile .sch = schools outside of the U.S. .k12 = U.S. schools .ac = academics not in the U.S. Country Extensions .uk = United Kingdom .ca = Canada .fr = France .us = United States .bz = Belize Also used when .biz is already taken

Evaluating a Web Page Check for posting/editing dates Look for contact information Google the author Is the URL related/relevant? Is there an “About” page? professional-looking Don’t let a page fool you into accepting all of it’s Information as fact!

Regularly updated personal journal published on the web

22 Downloading is . . . Transferring files from another computer to your own

23 Uploading is . . . Transferring files from your computer to a web server

24 Cookies . . . Computer files containing personal information about a user. These cookies are automatically stored each time you fill out a form about yourself and then they are sent to a central computer anytime it requests them. DELETE cookies often! (Tools, Delete Browsing History)
