2 IMPORTANCE OF CALCIUM A primary component of bones and teeth
Required for muscle and nerve activity Adequate calcium and vitamin D status must be maintained to prevent bone loss

3 CALCIUM DEFICIENCIES Poorly mineralized and weak bones
Leads to Osteoporosis in adulthood Rickets in children Osteomalacia Rickets in adults Stunted growth in children Convulsions and muscle spasms

4 OSTEOPOROSIS A condition in which low bone density or weak bone structure leads to an increased risk of bone fracture.

5 RICKETS Rickets in Children Osteomalacia Soft, weak bones in children
Results when children always wear sunscreen outdoors, live where there is little sunlight, stay indoors too often, don’t consume enough vitamin D Also a hereditary type of Rickets Means “soft bones” A disease that weakens bones Bones break down faster than they can reform Pain in bones, bone fractures, and muscle weakness Occurs in adults

6 VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM AKA Calcitriol
Stimulates the active transport of calcium in the small intestine and colon The D3 form is what aids calcium absorption and utilization You can produce your AI of vitamin D from spending minutes in the sun each day
