3 Introduction Draco the Dragon is a constellation discovered by Ptolemy in the early second century. It is based on Greek and Roman myth.

4 History Draco was found in the 200s by Ptolemy.
In Roman Legend, Draco fought the Titans. After 10 years of fighting, he was still not defeated. Then, the Romans said for Draco to fight the goddess Minerva. Minerva killed Draco then tossed him into the sky. In Greek Legend, Hercules fought Draco. One he defeated Draco, he also tossed him into the sky. Early Christians believed Draco was the snake for the Garden of Eden.

5 Stars Draco is made up of 14 to 18 stars. Some of the stars include:
Thuban, Rastaban, Tyl, and Kuma. Dracois made up of many galaxies, two of them are ARP188 and Tadpole, which is 420 million light years away!

6 Location During the winter, Draco is surrounded by 3 constellations.
To the North is the Little Dipper. To the East is The Herdsman. To the West is Cepheus. During the summer, Hercules is to the South-East of Draco.

7 Viewing You can see Draco almost year-round. The best times to see it is: March 15, midnight April 1, 11 pm May 15, 8 pm December 15, midnight January 15, 10 pm February 15, 8 pm

8 Names Many people/things have been named after Draco.
The US Cargo ship USS Draco (AK-79) The 1996 movie, Dragonheart. J.K. Rowling named her character, Draco Malfoy after the constellation in the Harry Potter series.

9 Fun Facts! Did you know that Draco is the oldest known constellation?
Draco’s original name was Draconis. The best time to see Draco is in July at 9 pm. 4,000 years ago, Draco was were Ursa Major (The Big Dipper) is now!
