1 Sales Training INTRODUCTION TO RESIN It’s all about our customers.

2 What is Resin? Plastics are derived from organic products. The materials used in the production of plastics are natural products such as cellulose, coal, and natural gas, salt and crude oil. The production of plastic begins with a distillation process in an oil refinery. The two major processes used to produce plastics are called polymerisation and polycondensation, and they both require specific catalysts. It’s all about our customers.

3 Description Properties Product Applications
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET, PETE). PAT is clear, tough, and has good gas and moisture barrier properties. This resin is commonly used in beverage bottles and many injection-molded consumer product containers. Cleaned, recycled PET flakes and pellets are in great demand for spinning fiber for carpet yarns, producing fiberfill and geo-textiles. Properties Clear and optically smooth surfaces. Excellent barrier to oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide. High impact capability and shatter resistance. Excellent resistance to most solvents. Capability for hot-filling up to 140˚F. Product Applications Plastic bottles for soft drinks, water, juice and beer Clear food containers, cups and trays It’s all about our customers.

4 Description Properties Product Applications
High Density Polyethelene (HDPE). HDPE is used to make many types of bottles and can liners. Because HDPE has a good chemical resistance, it is used for packaging many household and industrial chemicals such as detergents and bleach. Properties Excellent resistance to most solvents. Higher strength compared to other forms of polyethylene. Relatively stiff material with useful temperature capabilities. Product Applications Bottles for milk, water, juice, cosmetics, shampoo, dish and laundry detergents, and household cleaners. Grocery bags and office trash bags. Cereal box liners. It’s all about our customers.

5 Description Properties Product Applications
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC, Vinyl). In addition to its stable physical properties, PVC has good chemical resistance, weatherbility, flow characteristics and stable electrical properties. These diverse slate of vinyl products can be broadly divided into rigid and flexible materials. Properties High impact strength, brilliant clarity as well as excellent processing performance. Resistance to grease, oil and chemicals. Product Applications Flexible packaging uses include bags for bedding and medical use, shrink wrap for shipping and supermarket film for deli, meat, produce, seafood and bakery. It’s all about our customers.

6 Description Properties Product Applications
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE). LDPE is used predominately in film application due to its toughness, flexibility and relative transparency, making it popular for use in applications where heat sealing is necessary. LDPE also is used to manufacture some flexible lids and bottles as well as in wire and cable applications. Properties Excellent resistance to acids, bases and vegetable oils. Toughness, flexibility and relative transparency. Product Applications Bags for dry cleaning, newspapers, bread, frozen foods, fresh produce, as well as household garbage. Shrink wrap and stretch film. Coatings for hot and cold beverage cups. It’s all about our customers.

7 Description Properties Product Applications
Polypropylene (PP). PP has good chemical resistance, is strong, and has a high melting point making it good for hot-fill liquids. This resin is found in flexible and rigid packaging, fibers, and large molded parts for automotive and consumer products. Properties Excellent optical clarity in biaxially oriented films and stretch blow molded containers. Low moisture vapor transmission Inertness toward acids, alkalis and most solvents Product Applications Food containers for yogurt, margarine, takeout meals, deli and produce foods as well as beverages. Medicine bottles. Bottle caps and closures. Bottles for catsup and syrup. It’s all about our customers.

8 Description Properties Product Applications
Polystyrene (PS). PS is a versatile plastic that can be rigid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. It has a relatively low melting point. Typical applications include protective packaging, bottles, and food containers. Properties Excellent moisture barrier for short shelf life products. Excellent optical clarity in general purpose form. Significant stiffness in both foamed and rigid forms. Low density and high stiffness in foamed applications. Low thermal conductivity and excellent insulation properties. Able to withstand heat up to 100˚F Product Applications Food service items, such as cups, plates, bowls, cutlery, hinged takeout containers (clamshells), meat and poultry trays, and rigid food containers (e.g., yogurt). These items may be made with foamed and non-foamed PS. It’s all about our customers.
