1 Yenesis Alvarez Period 5
Muscle Function Yenesis Alvarez Period 5

2 Skeletal Muscles Also known as striated muscle
Attach to skeleton by tendons Under voluntary control 40% of body weight

3 Functions 4 main roles in the body: Producing movement
Maintaining posture Stabilizing joints Generating heat

4 Movement All movements are a result of muscle contraction
Skeletal muscles: accountable for locomotion and manipulation Allows the quick response to changes in external environment Allow for emotional expressions

5 Maintain Posture Main objective: Maintain seated posture despite never ending pull of gravity Skeletal muscles function continuously in order to make this possible

6 Maintain Posture Reduces stress and strain on your spine
Allows work to be more efficient Easier to breathe Improves circulation and digestion Prevents muscle fatigue and muscular pain

7 Stabilizing Joints Joint stability: Skeletal muscles:
Refers to why some joints are easier to be dislocated and have injuries than others Depends on 3 factors: Shape, size, and arrangement of articular surfaces Ligaments Tone of the muscles around joint Skeletal muscles: Pull on bones to cause movement Stabilize joints

8 Stabilizing Joints Muscle tendons are essential in stabilizing joints
Tendons pull on the bone The tighter the ligaments, the more stable the joint is

9 Generating Heat By-product of muscle activity
Muscle contraction is powered by ATP 75% of that energy escapes as heat Heat released is responsible for maintaining normal body temperature Skeletal muscle: muscle type most responsible for heat generation

10 Review 4 functions of muscles: movement, posture, joint stability, generates heat Main muscle involved: skeletal muscle Movement causes by muscle contraction Benefits of posture: better breathing, better circulation and digestion, avoids muscle fatigue Joint stability: deals with avoiding injury and dislocation Heat generator: Powered by ATP

11 Question #1 Which of the following is NOT one of the functions of muscles? Maintaining posture Generation of heat Pump blood throughout the body Stabilizing joints

12 Question #2 What allows for muscles to generate heat?
ATP powers muscle contraction, releasing energy of which most of is composed of heat The friction between the tendons allows for heat to be produced When bones are fused together, heat is produced Muscles naturally produce heat without any further work or adjustment

13 Question #3 How do skeletal muscles manage to stabilize joints?
By producing ATP By pulling on bones to cause movement Skeletal muscles do not stabilize joints By maintaining an upright posture
