1 Good Morning, Greetings… Series of lessons on “A Study On Morals & Ethics.” Last week we finished up looking at what the Bible says on the issue of “Alcoholic Beverage Consumption.” Today we are going to be looking at the “Modesty Message” found in the Bible (SLIDE)

2 M O D E S M T E Y S The fashion industry is constantly looking for way to maximize sexual appeal by continually pushing the envelope of what should be covered. The women who invented the mini-skirt have been quoted as saying, “Mini-clothes are symbolic of those girls who want to seduce a man.” There is absolutely no doubt that immodest dress is highly esteemed in our society today!!! You can’t go anywhere in public these days without running smack-dab into this situation. Unfortunately many in the brotherhood have swallowed the bate of Satan “hook-line-sinker” and seek to justify it at every turn. Luke 16:15 “…You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” Make no mistake brethren “immodest dress” is an abomination to God as we shall see today. (SLIDE) S A G E

3 What Does God Say About The Clothing We Wear?
Like with everything else that will get us into heaven if obeyed or keep us out of heaven if ignored we have the answers to the questions on morals and ethics (2 Peter 1:3). So what does God say about the clothing we wear? Romans 15:4 states, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning…” What can we learn from the O.T. then, that will benefit our learning this morning? (SLIDE)

4 Adam & Eve In The Garden

5 “And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”
Genesis 3:21

6 “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.” Genesis 37:3

7 The Priests Worshiping

8 “And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.”
Exodus 20:26

9 “For Aaron’s sons you shall make coats and sashes and caps
“For Aaron’s sons you shall make coats and sashes and caps. You shall make them for glory and beauty. 41 And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests… Exodus 28:40-43

10 …42 You shall make for them linen undergarments to cover their naked flesh. They shall reach from the hips to the thighs; 43 and they shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they go into the tent of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister in the Holy Place, lest they bear guilt and die. This shall be a statute forever for him and for his offspring after him.” Exodus 28:40-43

11 Babylon The Shamed

12 “Take the millstones and grind meal
“Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, Take off the skirt, Uncover the thigh, Pass through the rivers. 3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, Yes, your shame will be seen; I will take vengeance, And I will not arbitrate with a man.” Brothers and sisters can there be any doubt about what God considers “nakedness” and thus immodest. God expects everything from the bottom of the neck to the knees to be “hidden” from others. Clothes that are “too short, and/or too tight, and/or too thin are expose ones “nakedness.” There is only one person that should have free access to ones “nakedness” and that is ones spouse. (SLIDE) Isaiah 47:2-3

13 Be Undefiled The Marriage Bed
The Scriptures bear this out plainly. (SLIDE)

14 “…Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.”
There is nothing wrong with husband and wife desiring each other physically. Not only does God make that clear here but we see that throughout Paul’s letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 7). The marriage bed is to be undefiled. (SLIDE) Proverbs 5:19

15 “Let marriage be had in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Hebrews 13:4

16 What Makes God’s People Different From All Other People?

17 To God’s Word God’s People Listen
The world doesn’t listen to God but we do!!! This is why Jesus so many times says…(SLIDE)

18 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches…”
Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22

19 “He who has ears to hear, let him her.”
We must listen to God’s Word concerning the “Modesty Message.” (SLIDE) Matthew 15:11

20 “likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.” Paul is not talking about what I consider modest or what you consider modest, no he is talking about what God considers modest in His eyes. Brethren we must never strive to please ourselves, or others for that matter, but God alone (Galatians 1:10). There are three areas of moderation under discussion here in our text. First, respectable apparel – This word means “orderly, well-arranged, decent, modest.” The idea here is not “haphazard” clothing but that which is respectable before God’s eyes. Second, modesty – The word means “a sense of shame, modesty.” The idea here is clothing that does not bring shame on oneself before God’s eyes. Third, self-control – The word means “soundness of mind; sound judgment.” The idea here is clothing should not incite lustful thoughts from others before God’s eyes. So, what else makes God’s people different from all other people? (SLIDE) 2 Timothy 2:9-10

21 God’s People Teach God’s Word

22 “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” 2 Timothy 4:2

23 “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” We cannot expect others to know God’s Word on modesty if we don’t tell them. I’m not talking about those outside of Christ, I’m talking about those in Christ which includes our children, grandchildren, etc. Colossians 1:28

24 M O D E S M T E Y S Brethren, just as surely as God expects His children to worship differently and to act differently than the world, He expects us to dress differently than the world. Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” We are to “know” and to “teach” the biblical “Modesty Message.” S A G E
