2 Bell Work Pick up note sheet from front table
On the bottom, back of the note sheet, List 5 things, in your daily life, that you “cannot live without” Copy homework into planner: Complete flip chart vocabulary. Wait quietly when completed.

3 What are Values? Something that is desirable, worthwhile, and important Influenced by family, friends, teachers, coaches, television, and movies Each person has different values which guide his/her daily decisions

4 Needs vs. Wants Need - something necessary or required for life
Brainstorm examples of needs Food, water, clothing and shelter

5 How Much Money Does A Person Need?
Families in India earn $1.00 to $2.00 a day. Could your family live off $1.00 to $2.00 a day? What do you think families in India think they NEED? How do values influence needs? You need shelter, but do you NEED a mansion? You need clothes, but do you NEED designer clothes?

6 Needs vs. Wants Want - something unnecessary but desired
May increase the quality of living or make a person happier Brainstorm examples of wants MP3 player, Play Station, designer clothes How do values influence wants? If being popular or having all of the newest gadgets is valued, a person may have a lot of wants

7 You Decide! Revisit your bell work. Label each item need or want!
Be prepared to discuss.

8 What is a Goal? Goal - something a person intends to accomplish

9 Why Set Goals? Would you set out on a cross-country adventure without a road map? Setting goals are like a road map Provide direction Focus on the important things Keep the end result in mind

10 Types of Goals Short-Term – can be accomplished within one year
Improving grades at school Making the basketball team Saving money to buy a new MP3 player Long-Term – can be accomplished in more than one year Attending college Getting a great job Buying a new car

11 Decision Making Process
It guides individuals to think through all components of making a good decision STEPS: 1. Identify the problem 2. List alternatives 3. Decide 4. Evaluate the Results

12 Steps Identify the Problem List Alternatives
Know the problem or question before searching for an answer List Alternatives Brainstorm pros and cons for all of the possible choices

13 Steps Continued Decide Evaluate the results
Make the best choice after thinking about all of the consequences Evaluate the results This will help in making better decisions in the future

14 So Many Choices! There are many different options to chose when making a decision Every option has a different consequence
