1 Stem Parts

2 External Parts Terminal bud: bud on end of stem
Axillary or lateral bud: bud on side of stem Lateral bud Terminal bud

3 External Parts Lenticels: breathing pores

4 External Parts Bud scale scars: show where the terminal buds have been located

5 External Parts Leaf scars: show where leaves were attached

6 Internal Parts Xylem: tissue that transports water and nutrients up from roots to stems and leaves

7 Internal Parts Phloem: tissue that transports food down from leaves to roots

8 Internal Parts Cambium:
thin, green, actively growing tissue located between the xylem and phloem produces all new stem cells

9 Internal Parts Vascular bundles: Part of the transport system
Contains xylem and phloem

10 Internal Parts Bark: old inactive phloem Heartwood: old inactive xylem
Sapwood: new active xylem

11 Classes of Plants Monocots Dicots

12 Monocots Plant stems have vascular bundles that contain both xylem and phloem in each bundle Examples: corn, grasses

13 Dicots Plant stems have phloem layer and xylem layer separated by cambium Example: Tree

14 Monocots vs. Dicots

15 Monocots vs. Dicots

16 Functions of the Stem Translocation:
Move water and minerals from roots up to the leaves. Move food from the leaves down to the roots. Support of the braches, leaves, flowers, fruit, and/or seeds.
