1 John Locke – Two Treatises of Government
English Enlightenment Thinker (Philosopher) and founder of liberalism Ask why? Won’t accept “Because I said so” or “That’s the way it has always been” Enlightenments was the time period in the late 1600s and 1700s where people used reason and science to explain the world His philosophies on the natural rights of man and government impacted the American Revolution.

2 C. We brag about the power of British protection of the colonies, but do we ask why she does it? Why should we remain loyal when the British protect us for the benefit of the Crown and not because it is what is best for us? B. We remain loyal because the King is somehow greater than his people as the son of god. There is no logical reason to explain this idea. Differences between good and bad and male and female are obvious. The King as the son of god is not. Which makes it worth asking if a King benefits or harms his people. D. I challenge the most faithful loyalist to give any benefit the Colonies have from remaining loyal. There is not one. A. Some say we must be loyal to our mother country. Why should we remain loyal to a parent that makes war on her children? Even those we consider most uncivilized do not do that.

10 patriotism Love, support of, and defense of one’s country Founders didn’t have a country – they showed love for the colonies: Wanting a voice and equal rights under the E.B.o.R. Showed patriotism with their willingness to put what they value on the line Willing to lose all for freedoms gained

11 I am able to use the Declaration of Independence to explain why colonists wanted to separate from Great Britain (Wrongs) and why they believed they had the right to do so (natural rights). Rephrase: I can use the Declaration of Independence to explain why colonists wanted to fire the king (Wrongs) and why they believed they were allowed to (Rights)

12 Ideals about Government in the Declaration of Independence
New ideas in the Declaration: Government’s job is to protect natural rights All men are created equal- king isn’t god’s son – king is just a man – king has no more right to CONTROL than anyone else. He was not born to rule. People hold the power People can alter/abolish government if they don’t do their job
